Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Campbell Rose from Carter Lindsay & Weber taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of August, 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included –

4580 fat cattle 

28000 lamb
9000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers increased and quality was good. There were plenty of well finished grown steers and heifers, also a good supply of feeder cattle. There were plenty of cows yarded in good condition. The market was slightly softer than last week.

 

  • Weaners were very limited, but overall firm on last week. Feeder steers averaged 5–10 cents softer. Medium weight feeder steers sold from 340-429 cents, with heavy weight feeders selling from 370–424 cents. Feeder heifers were also 10–15 cents softer, selling from 300–360 cents.

  • Heavy trade cattle were firm ranging from 300–363 cents. Trade cattle were back 5 cents selling from 364–376 cents. Prime grown steers and bullocks were 10 cents stronger, selling from 292– 385 cents.

  • Heavy heifers were 5 cents softer selling from 305–379 cents. Cows were firm to 5 cents softer, with the heavy cows selling from 285–339 cents & the medium weight 2 scores selling from 248–290 cents.


 Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

  1. Firstly, Craig and Kerry Walters of ‘Plain Creek’ at Wongarbon, who sold Angus feeder steers to 398 cents, weighing 495kg returning $1971.

  2. The McWhirter family of ‘Carinya’ at Tooraweenah, who sold heavy Santa cross bullocks for 388 cents, weighing 672kg and returning $2610.

  3. Jason Beck at Coonamble, sold heavy Angus bullocks to 370 cents, weighing 815kg and returning $3015.

  4. And lastly for the Carter Family of ‘Innaminna’ at Nyngan, who sold Speckle Park bullocks for 376 cents, weighing 535kg and returning $2013.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where numbers lifted with a good line of trade and heavy weight lambs on offer. Extra heavy lambs were limited & light Dorpers were scarce. There were good runs of Merino lambs & not many new season suckers. The market sold to overall firm trends.

  • New season suckers sold to $210. The 2 score processing lambs sold from $70-$145. Lighter trade lambs sold from $140-$189 with the heavy trades selling from $185-$230. Heavy lambs sold from $205-$258.  Extra heavy lambs were limited, but topped at $295. Merino lambs were dearer with heavy weights selling from $156-$220.

  • Mutton numbers lifted and the quality was better. Prices were firm to $5 dearer.

  • Medium weight ewes sold from $55 - $111. Heavy crossbred ewes topped at $136, while heavy Merino ewes reached $155 & heavy Merino wethers reached $160.


 Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients - 

  1.  Firstly, Craig and Susie McFetridge of ‘Tathra’ at Dubbo, sold heavy crossbred lambs for $200.

  2. Stan Ellis of ‘Pinevale’ at Mogriguy, sold heavy Merino ewes with a good jacket, for $155.

  3. The Plummer Family of ‘Trigoona’ at Tottenham, sold heavy 1st cross lambs for $265 to local exports. 

  4. And lastly, the O’Brien family of ‘Nebinedulla’ at Bollon, sold trade weight Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition for $160.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
