Fat Cattle Report
Good morning everybody, this is John Lindsay taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the third week of August, 2024.
Tallied numbers this week included –
3000 fat cattle
28000 lamb
10000 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a rain affected market with some very good quality falls which did stop some numbers. The market in general was firm on last week’s strong market, even though some of the drafts the quality was a little bit mixed, with cows enjoying rises of up to 6 cents.
Vealer steers were in short supply and mainly to restockers, seeing sales between 350 and 392 cents. Vealer heifers to restockers 310 to 374 cents and mainly around that 360 cent mark but baring in mind there was some good quality runs of offer today, with heavier drafts over 300kg 270 to 340 cents.
Yearling steers up to 300kg to feedlotters 340 to 452 cents, but mainly around that 410 cent mark, with heavier drafts to feedlotters 344 to 416 cents, but mainly around that 405 cent mark.
Yearling heifers under 300kg to feedlotters 280 to 310 cents, with a big run of Angus heifers seeing particularly well due to a large run seeing sales between 302 and 350 cents. With kill drafts 290 to 360 cents but mainly around that 320 cent mark.
Into export sales, feeder steers up to 500kg 290 to 374 cents with the top end being Angus drafts. With heavier drafts up to 600kg 320 to 428 cents but mainly around that 400 cent mark but baring in mind what was yarded was very well bred Angus drafts. Export heifers up to 500kg 294 to 350 cents, with heavy weights seeing very similar values.
Cows were strong, medium weight cows 250 to 295 cents but mainly around that 270 cents, with heavy high yielding cows 286 to 323 cents, with this weeks top price up to 343 cents for a pen of heavy prime high yielding Angus cows.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients:
Paul & Carmel Quinn of “Caroo” at Dubbo, sold forward Angus steers that weighed 460kg for 400 cents and these top steers came back at $1830.
To Nyngan for John & Mary Burley of “Woodlands Station”, who sold prime Angus cows that weights 610kg for 332 cents and these top cows came back at $2020.
While off “Kopyje” at Canbelego, who sold a run of very well bred Santa weaners with the top draft making 364 cents, they weighed 340kg and these top calves came back at $1240. While on the same truck, well finished Santa cows made 286 cents they weighed 475kg and these trim cows came back at $1355.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens, where there was another large number on offer with all categories well represented. The market in general was firm to at least $5 dearer for all well finished lambs regardless of breed, with light weights this week up to $5 cheaper, but I must say it was a very good yarding of well finished Merino lambs and the market responded very positively.
Into crossbred sales firstly, with light kill types up to 16kg dressed $80 to $90. Up to 18kg dressed $124 to $135. Light trade $132 to $155, Medium trade $133 to $173 but mainly around that $160 mark with heavy trade or light export $154 to $195 but mainly around $180. With export weights up to 26kg dressed $171 to $230 with a big chunk just over $200. Drafts up to 30kg dressed $202 to $266, with the big bangers over 30kg dressed $250 to $300 but mainly around that $260 mark.
To Merino sales, light kill types up to 16kg dressed $70 to $96
Up to 18kg dressed $88 to $130.Light trade $120 to $142 & medium trade $112 to $160 but mainly around $150.
Heavy trade or light export $120 to $194 but mainly around that $180 mark. With export weights $188 to $215 but mainly around $200 with super heavies up to 30kg dressed and like I mentioned these were very good $200 to $224.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients:
Locally for Matt & Kylie Whale of “Glenroy” at Wellington, who sold fresh, trade weight unshorn suckers in a 3 score condition and these top lambs made $180.
Paul & Carmel Quinn of “Caroo” at Dubbo, sold export weight Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition and these top lambs made $190.
To the Marra for Simon & Kelly Earl of “Longstowe”, who sold export weight Merino lambs with a 1 inch skin and these top lambs made $180.
While a western client – large framed Merino lambs with a ¼ inch skin, in a 3 score condition and they made $175.
Into the mutton pens now, where there was another good yarding on offer, with the market in general only just firm for light sheep and up to $5 dearer for the heavy sheep.
Light boner ewes $35 to $46, Boner ewes $54 to $80.
Medium weights up to 24kg dressed $76 to $120 for Merino’s and mainly around that $100 mark.
Export weights up to 30kg dressed $76 to $135 for Merino’s and mainly around that $120 mark, with crossbred drafts $88 to $124, with super heavies over 30kg dressed $113 to $144 for crossbreds or $130 to $175 for Merino’s and mainly around that $145 mark.
Wethers were shorter supplied this week with medium weights up to 24kg dressed $97 to $113.
Export weights up to 30kg dressed $108 to $135
With super heavies over 30kg dressed up to $147 for Merino’s and up to $143 for crossbred.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients:
At Coonamble for the Goldsmith family, who sold large framed, export weight Merino ewes with a 6 week skin and these top ewes made $130.
At Baradine for The McConnaughty of “Elstow”, who also sold large framed Merino ewes in a 3 score condition with an 8 week skin and they made $104.
While for a western vendor, large framed Merino ewes in a 3 score condition with an inch skin, to the export orders and they made $125.

Sheep and goat electronic identification
Applications open for producers and agents
All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.
Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.
Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.
Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
