Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of September. 

Tallied numbers included -

6500 fat cattle
33000 lamb
10000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers remained the same as last week with most cattle having plenty of weight and condition. Yearlings were well supplied and there was good supply of feeders and trade. Grown steers and heifers made up the bulk of the number's and 1500 cows were penned.

  • Feeder steers remained firm as the medium weights sold from 370 - 430 cents, while the heavy feeders sold to 408 cents.

  • Heifers to feed also remained firm to range from 280 - 320 cents.  Heavy trade steers lifted 10 cents to sell from 372 - 403 cents.

  • Prime grown steers and bullocks gained 4 cents, selling from 331 - 387 cents.

  • Grown heifers were dearer and reached a top of 378 cents.

  • Cows remained firm again this week with the better D3/4 cows selling from 303 - 348 cents.

    Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

  • Locally for Stan Noonan of ’Retford Park’, who sold Santa cross steers for 320 cents, they weighed 434kg and returned $1390.

  • Paul Press of the Deep Creek Rd at Geurie, sold Hereford cross steers for 326 cents, weighing 323kg to return $1056.

  • The Steele family of ‘Kainga’ at Warren, sold Santa cross cows for 278 cents, weighing 562kg to return $1563.

  • The Carter family of ‘Wilgaree’ at Nyngan, sold Angus cows for 330 cents, weighing 685kg to return $2260.

  • And lastly for The Dare family of ‘Ingalala’ at Carinda, who sold Santa cross cows for 320 cents, weighing 505kg to come back at $1616.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where the market sold to a cheaper trend.  All categories were represented with good runs of heavy and extra heavy weights. New season lambs were up on last week’s numbers but ranged in weight from heavies to store weights. All the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

  • New season lambs sold from $118 - $130 for the store/restocker types while the trade weights sold from $170 - $193 and the heavy weights reached a top of $238.

  • Old season light weight lambs lost $10 to sell from $88 - $127.

  • Trade weight lambs eased $8 to range from $142 - $192 with freshness in skin and skin length a price factor.

  • Heavy weight lambs lost $5 to range from $175 - $220 & the extra heavy weights sold from $236 - $278.

  • Merino lambs were again well supplied, yet again skin length and presentation along with weight is a big price driver.

  • Trade weight Merino lambs sold from $118 - $157 with the heavy weights reaching a top of $220. 

    The best heavy hoggets reached a top of $186.

    Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for some of their clients -

  • Locally for the O’Connor family of ‘Warren Downs” at Wongarbon, who sold 2nd cross suckers in a 4 score condition to top the market at $238.

  • Anna Toohey of ‘Fella Park’, sold 1st cross lambs in a 3/4 score condition, with a neat 6 week skin to the domestic kill for $230.

  • Matt & Rachel Adams of ‘St Louie’ at Mendooran, sold Dorper cross lambs in a 3 score condition to the domestic markets for $190.

  • The Simpson Family of ‘Binginbar Farms’ at Gollon, sold Dorper lambs in a 4 score condition to the exporters for $230.

  • Darren Smith of ‘Kurrajong Park’ at Narromine, sold crossbred lambs in a 4 score condition, with a 2 inch skin for $255.

  • And for The Plummer family of ‘Trigoona’ at Tottenham, who sold 1st cross lambs in a 4 score condition, with a 6 week skin for $195

    Into the mutton pens now where numbers were back and quality was good yet prices fell by $15-$20.

  • Light ewes sold from $30 - $52

  • Medium weight ewes sold from $58 - $75

  • Heavy weight ewes sold from $82 - $101

  • Light wethers sold from $48 - $64

  • Medium weight wethers sold from $72 - $88

  • Heavy wethers sold from $92 - $116.

    Just a quick quote for the Betts family of ‘Mirrabooka’ at Cobar, who sold heavy Merino wethers with a 4 week skin to the export orders for $100.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
