Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of October 2024. Tallied numbers this week included –

4400 fat cattle
19000 lamb
7500 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a few less numbers this week that saw everything sell to dearer trends.

  • Young kill cattle were 10c - 15c dearer with prime yearling steers topping at 363c/kg while the heifers brought 330c/kg.

  • Both feeder steers and heifers were 10 – 15c dearer with feeder steers selling from 298 - 378c/kg while the feeder heifers made 280c - 333c/kg.

  • Young restockers were sold to a stronger demand compared to last week, with steers selling to a top of 414c/kg for steers.

  • Grown steers were 5 – 10c dearer while the prime grown heifers were up to 15c dearer with the prime grown steers making 325c – 354c/kg while the heifer portion brought 285c – 344c/kg.

  • Cows were 10c dearer, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 220 - 258c/kg while the prime heavy weights made 275 - 310c/kg.


    Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients:

  1. Locally at Dubbo for the O’Brien family off “Glenhaven”, who sold, well fattened Angus heifers that made 305c/kg and weighed 405kg bringing $1224

  2. At Wellington now for the Pentagas family off “Fairveiw”, who sold, well bred angus steers that weighed 335kg and sold for 380c/kg coming back at $1275/head.

  3. Lastly to Stuart town for the Quirk family off “Monte Cresto”, who sold, well bred Angus feeder steers that made 367c/kg and weighed 426kg making $1566/head.



Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

  • Into the lamb pens now, where numbers were up slightly in what was a mixed quality yarding with good runs of trade weight lambs alongside limited selection of heavy weights.

  • Lightweight new season lambs to restock sold from $108 - $165 while the trade weight new seasons brought $158 - $195 averaging 800 – 850c/kg.

  • Heavy weight new seasons made $200 - $235 averaging around 850 – 900c/kg. Old trade weight lambs were sold around firm with 20kg – 24kg made $168 - $195 to average between 780c/kg.

  • Heavy weight lambs 24kg – 30kg selling from $189 - $246/head with lambs over 30kg brought from $230 - $260/head to average 850c/kg.

  • lightweight Merino lambs sold from $80 - $135 with trade weight Merino lambs topping at $189.


Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients:

  1. Firstly to Coolabah for the Edwards family off “Tubbavilla”, who sold, well bred crossbred lambs in a 2 & 3 score condition with an inch skin to the southern orders for $175.

  2. Down the road to Nyngan now for the Cleaver family off “Murrabee”, who sold, fresh Aussie White suckers off the ewe to the northern exporters for $214.

  3. Locally for the John Blease off “Tanners Creek”, who sold, well bred Aussie White lambs in a 2 & 3 score condition to the local exporter for $190.

  4. Lastly to Geurie now for the Whillock family off “Maxland”, who sold, well bred 2nd cross suckers in a fresh condition off the ewe for $217.


Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a good quality yarding that was reduced on numbers slightly and saw everything gain $10 - $15/head. Merino ewes sold from $60 - $145 while the crossbred ewes brought $65 - $126 with most mutton averaging between 320 -360c/kg.


Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients:

Quickly to Baradine for the Horder family off “Cartref”, who sold, well bred Aussie White ewes in a 4 score condition to the local exporter for $105.


  • Just a reminder that the last cattle sale of the year will be Thursday the 12th of December and the final sheep sale will be Monday the 16th of December.

  • The first sale of the year will be a sheep sale on Monday the 6th of January and the first cattle sale will be Thursday the 9th of January.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
