Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Campbell Rose from Carter Lindsay & Weber taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of May 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included -

3400 fat cattle 

10,000 lambs

4,500 mutton

 

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers increased and quality improved, especially in the young cattle. There were plenty of well bred cattle to return to the paddock and good lines of feeders. 

Restocker cattle were in strong demand. Steers topping at 408c and the heifers reaching 330c. Overall the restocker job was 25-35c stronger. Feeder steers were 10c softer for the middle weights, and 10c stronger for the heavy weights, with quality being a factor. Feeders steers sold from 320c-378c. Feeder heifers were firm, selling from 266 - 324c. With limited supply of heavy cattle, grown steers were 20c dearer, ranging from 289c-322c. The heifer job was also 10-15c stronger, selling from 296c-320c.  Heavy cows were 5c stronger selling from 218c-250c. Medium weight 2 score cows were back 20c, selling from 168c-215c. Bulls were 30c stronger. 


Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients.

  • The Crockett Family of ‘Nithsdale’ Bakers Swamp, sold heavy Angus x bullocks making 280c, weighing 702kg and returning $1,960.

  • Ian and Ilka Grattan, of ‘Pine Park Holdings’, sold Angus x cows, PTIC for 232c, weighing 512kg and returning $1,180.

  • Phil and Debra Bell of ‘Barney’s’, Mendooran, sold heavy Angus heifers for 312c, weighing 565kg, and returning $1,760 to the southern exports.

  • The Atkinson Family, of ‘Wonga’ Yeoval, sold vendor bred Santa yearling steers for 345c, weighing 342kg and returning to the paddock for $1,180

  • Denis and Kristy Weston of ‘Yalgo’ Nymagee. Sold prime heavy vendor bred Rangemaster cows for 248c, weighing 698kg, returning $1,730.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where numbers were affected with rain about and quality remained fair to good. There was a good number of Dorper lambs and plenty of light mixed lambs selling on a stronger market. Light lambs to kill were up $10, selling from $90 to $127/head. Trade lambs were $5-$10 dearer this week selling from $140-$170. Lambs weighing 24-26kg sold from $168 to $195.  Heavy weight lambs remained consistent. Selling from $180-$208/head, and the extra heavy’s topped at $232/head.  Light Merino hoggets sold between $80 and $116, the best of the heavy hoggets made $149. 


Into the mutton pens now, where the numbers eased and quality was mixed. Prices lifted $10-$15/head. Medium weight ewes sold from $55-$88, heavy Merino ewes reached $117 with a good jacket, crossbred ewes reached $115 and the heavy wethers made $128.


Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients.

  • The Simpson Family, of ‘Binginbar Farms’, Gollan sold heavy Australian White hoggets, for $128. 

  • The Vernon Family, of Wellington, sold heavy merino sheep for $84

  • The Kidd Family, of ‘Kungee’ Dubbo, sold heavy crossbred lambs for $194

  • Col Ryan, of ‘Mayfield’, Gulargombone, sold crossbred lambs for $193

  • Kelvin Baker, of ‘Ercildoon’, Narromine, sold prime Australian White lambs, in a 3 score condition, for $168

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
