Fat Cattle Report
Good morning, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the last week of August 2023.
Tallied numbers this week included –
4500 fat cattle
22000 lambs
7000 sheep
Into the cattle pens firstly, with vealer steers under 200kg to restockers 520-286 cents with heavier better bred drafts up to 320 cents. Vealer heifers under 200kg to restockers 110-226 cents with plenty around that 170 cent mark. Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 212-270 cents for the plainer drafts or 290-314 cents for the better-bred forward drafts. Heavier drafts over 400kg to feed 260-314 cents with a big majority around that 290 cents with suitable kill drafts 290-300 cents.
Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters extremely tough 140-190 cents to restockers or 172-230 cents to feedlotters, with an isolated kill sale between242 and 300 cents, with the majority around 270 cents. Heavier drafts over 400kg 242-280 cents to kill, or 210-250 cents to feed.
Into export sales which were fully firm and up to 5 cents dearer for the better end, with young bullocks up to 600kg 245 – 280 cents, with mature age bullocks 250 – 280 cents, with export weight heifers 220 – 260 cents, but they had to be prime.
Cows were strong once again with light weight boner cows 80 – 100 cents. Boner cows 110 – 130 cents, medium weighs 160 – 208 cents, with plenty around that 190 cents, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 214 and 230 and topping at 240 cents.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where like the cattle there was a larger number on offer. The market in general was dearer for all good quality kill lambs with plainer drafts regardless of breed only just managing to stay firm on an already very tough market.
Into crossbred sales firstly, with light weights to restockers $20 - $44.
Light kill types up to 18kg dressed $42 – $67.
Light trade weights $55 - $84 with the majority around $70.
Medium trade $73 - $110 but needed to be rounded to get over $100.
Heavy trade $100 - $128.
Light exports $115 – $125, with drafts up to 30kg dressed $127 - $146
With super heavies over 30kgs dressed $153 - $158.
To Merino sales, light weights up to 16kg dressed $26 - $33
Up to 18kg dressed $40 - $48
Light trade $47 - $68.
Medium trade $62 - $77
With heavy trade $82 – $104, but seeing most sales around that $90 mark
With export weights $100 - $108, but bearing in mind they were very good.
To the mutton where better quality drafts were $8 - $10 dearer and even the plainer types were fully firm.
Light boner ewes $18 - $22
Boner ewes $35 – $50
Medium weights $26 - $57 for the plainer types or $50 – $75 for the better covered drafts.
With export weights $70 - $98 for Merino’s or $56 - $90 for crossbreds
With heavy weights over 30kgs dressed $66 - $110 for crossbreds, and up to $110 for Merino’s.
Wethers were in shorter supply with export weight Merino’s making between $76 and $98
With export weights over 30kg dressed and all Merino’s $98 – $115.
