Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Campbell Rose taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 1st week of June 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included –

2600 fat cattle 
13500 lambs
6000 mutton
2200 store cattle

 

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers increased and quality was mixed.  There were good numbers of yearlings that mostly suited feeder orders.  There was a limited number in heavy weight cattle and the cow run was also plainer, but overall sold in stronger trends.  

 Weaners were 15 cents stronger, with steers selling from 340 – 382 cents, with heifers selling from 278 - 315c/kg.  Feeder steers averaged 20 – 25 cents stronger with breed being a factor.  Medium weight feeder steers sold from 320 – 441 cents and heavy weight feeders selling from 270 – 392 cents.  Feeder heifers were also 35 cents stronger, selling from 280 -347 cents.

With a leading exporter not operating prime grown steers were 16 cents softer selling 280 -320 cents, while the heifers fell 40 cents, selling from 259 - 304c/kg.

 Heavy cows were 14 cents dearer, selling from 232 – 268 cents, medium weight cows sold from 170 – 212 cents, with the restockers paying up to 234 cents for PTIC cows. 

 

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients-

  • Firstly, the Clatworthy Family of ‘Mia Mia’ at Dubbo, who sold prime heavy Angus cows for 249 cents, weighing 644kg returning $1604.

  • Simon and Kelly Earl of ‘Longstowe’ at Warren, sold heavy feeder Angus heifers for 346 cents, weighing 495kg and returning $1713.

  • The Young Family of ‘Pinegrove’ at Nyngan, sold vendor bred feeder Angus steers for 393 cents, weighing 470kg and returning $1848. 

  • And Lastly for Noel and Lynette Dunn of ‘Bundong Station’ at Coolabah, who sold vendor bred Romagnola heifers for 270 cents, weighing a whopping 803kg and returning $2334. 


 Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where numbers were affected with rain about and quality improved.  There were plenty of well finished and neatly presented trade and heavy weight lambs.  Extra heavy lambs were limited.  There were good numbers of light lambs but not as many secondary trade lambs, overall the market sold to stronger trends. 

 The 2 score processing lambs sold from $90 - $115 lifting $3 - $5.  Trade lambs were $5 stronger, with the lighter trades selling from $125 - $160 and the heavy trades selling from $159 - $173.  Heavy lambs were $7 stronger selling from $193 - $220.  Extra heavy lambs were limited, but topped at $237.  Merino trade lambs were dearer, selling from $117 - $167.  Heavy hoggets gained $13 and sold from $130 - $160.

 Mutton numbers fell and quality was similar to last week.  Prices remained similar with medium weight ewes selling from $57 - $95.  Heavy crossbreds reached $125 and Merino’s topped at $115.

 

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -

  •  The Vernon Family of Wellington, sold trade Merino lambs for $110.

  • The Millner Family of ‘Geurie Homestead’ at Geurie, sold heavy crossbred lambs for $188.

  • Ben and Josie Howard of Dubbo, sold heavy Dorper ewes for $90.

  • The McKay Family of ‘Winnabri’ at Trangie, sold heavy Merino lambs for $167.

  • Graeme Angove of ‘Courtlands’ at Girilambone, sold Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition for $150.

  • And lastly for the Butler Family of ‘Jambaroo’ at Girilambone, who sold heavy crossbred hoggets for $156.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.

When filling out your NVD please ensure you complete and answer each question - please also ensure you sign and date the NVD.

If you make a mistake please initial it.

It is a legal requirement that the NVD is filled out correctly each time you sell livestock.
