Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of August 2023.
Tallied numbers this week included –
5200 fat cattle
14600 lambs
11400 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a mixed quality yarding. With a fair selection of young cattle to suit feeders & backgrounders. Alongside good runs of grown steers, heifers and cows.
Young kill cattle were firm with prime vealers topping at 300c/kg and prime yearlings bringing 273 - 330c/kg. Feeder steers were 5 – 10 cents cheaper with feeder heifers being 10 cents dearer. Feeder steers selling from 240 - 347c/kg while the feeder heifers made 208 - 280c/kg. Young restockers were sold to a stronger demand selling to a top of 340c/kg for steers and 278c/kg for heifers.
Grown steers were 15 – 20 cents dearer while prime heifers were 5 cents dearer, with the prime grown steers making 246 – 286c/kg while the heifer portion brought 210 – 276c/kg. Cows were 5 – 10 cents cheaper, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 50 - 197c/kg while the prime heavy weights made 165 - 246c/kg to average around 216c/kg.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –
Firstly to Nyngan for the Burley family of “Woodlands Station”, who sold well finished Angus cows for 232 cents, they weighed in at 601kg coming back at $1397.
Across to Tooraweenah for the McWhirter family of “Springfield”, who sold a great run of Angus cross steers, off the crop, with the tops weighing 624kg and making 273 cents, bringing $1704.
Lastly to Geurie for the Whillock family of “Maxland”, who sold, well bred Angus steers to the feed orders weighing 422kg making 344 cents and coming back at over $1454.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where it was a fair quality yarding with good runs of well finished heavy weight lambs alongside the odd pen of neat trade lambs. With a large portion of 2nd type lambs penned. Trade weight lambs were unchanged with suckers selling for $103 - $122 averaging 500c/kg. Trade weight old lambs made $60 - $122 to average between 440 – 485c/kg.
Heavy weight lambs were firm with old lambs 24kg – 30kg selling from $16 - $146 to average between 455 – 475c/kg, with lambs over 30kg brought from $145 - $157. Merino lambs were $10 - $15 dearer with trade weights selling from $42 - $104 while the heavy weights sold from $104 - $114.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients -
Firstly to Tottenham for the Cook family of “Glenidol”, who sold well bred Merino lambs in a fresh 3 score condition with an 8 week skin to the local exporter for $99.
To Wongarbon, for the O’Connor family of “Warren Downs”, who sold heavy weight crossbred lambs in fresh 3 & 4 score condition with an inch skin for $130.
Lastly to Wellington for the Deshon Family of “Rocklee”, who sold well bred Aussie White suckers in fresh condition, straight off the ewe for $100.
Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a good quality yarding that saw everything lose $4. Merino ewes sold from $40 - $115 while the crossbred ewes brought $50 - $101 and the Merino wethers topped at $84.
Just a quick quote this week for the Gibson family off “Wilgadale” at Girilambone, who sold well bred Merino ewes with an inch skin, in a 3 score condition to the local exporter for $68.
