Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look a this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the second week of August, 2023.
Tallied numbers this week included –
5500 fat cattle
19000 lambs
8000 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a larger number then last week and I must say it was a plainer yarding overall, which is a bearing on our season, although there were some decent forward cattle sprinkled throughout the yarding. The market in general was up to 20 cents cheaper for all plain categories – regardless of breed. Forward to killable cattle were firm to 10 cents cheaper, with feeder cattle just on firm to 10 cents cheaper.
Light vealer steers to restockers under 200kg – 210 to 358 cents with a big majority in the late 200’s. Heavier drafts around your 300kg – 278 to 360 cents and again plenty around that late 200 cents. Light vealer heifers to restockers – extremely tough, with drafts under 200kg live 170 to 200 cents, with heavy weights up to 300kg 160 to 245 cents, with heaps only just managing to get to 200 cents, with better feeder types over 300kg 220 to 260 cents.
Yearling steers under 300kg to restockers 256 to 340 cents, with a large majority around that 290 to 300 cent mark. Heavier drafts over 300kg to feeders 282 to 344 cents, with the plainer drafts 240 to 270 cents. Heavier drafts over 400kg 285 to 351 cents, with the top end being better quality and mainly Angus drafts.
Plain yearling heifers under 300kg 150 to 200 cents, with the forward drafts making up to 230 cents. Heavier drafts over 300kg 210 to 283 cents, with plenty around that 240 cent mark, with kill drafts 250 to 334 cents, with heavier drafts over 400kg to kill 230 to 270 cents or 206 to 260 cents to feed, with a big chunk in that 230 cent bracket.
Into export sales, heavy kill cattle were in short supply, with the best young bullocks 250 to 276 cents. Light boner cows 60 to 80 cents, with boner cows 80 to 140 cents, medium weights 140 to 180 cents for the plainer types or 150 to 210 cents for the forward drafts and mainly around that 180 cents, with heavy high yielding cows 192 to 230 cents and up to 246 cents with the majority around that 220 cent bracket.

Into the lamb pens, where like the cattle there was another large number on offer – quality was mixed on what was only just firm on what is still an extremely tough market.
Into older crossbred sales firstly, with light kill types up to 16kg dressed $37 to $52
Light trade weights up to 20kg dressed $50 to $65 for Dorper’s or $55 to $85 for crossbreds
Medium trade $66 to $105 with a lot around that $80
With drafts up to 24kg $95 to $122
With export weights up to 26kg dressed $104 to $128
Up to 30kg dressed $125 to $138
With super heavies well over 30kg dressed $139 to $150 generally and topping at $161
To Merino sales, with light weights to restockers $11 to $18
Up to 16kg dressed $21 to $48 with around $30
Up to 18kg dressed $38 to $50
Light trade weights $43 to $54
With medium trade $50 to $73
With heavier drafts up to 24kg dressed $66 to $90 but they had to be good to get there
With the best heavy Merino’s estimated to weigh 26kg made $119.
To the mutton pens, where there was another large yarding with the market in general only just firm to $10 cheaper, on what was like the lambs a very plain yarding.
Light boner ewes $12 to $20
Boner ewes $14 to $25
Medium weights $36 to $52 for Merino’s or $50 to $65 for crossbreds
Light export $30 to $64 for crossbreds or $64 to $78 for the bulk of the Merino’s, with the rounded longer skins up to $80
With export weights over 24kg dressed $76 to $100 for Merino’s or $70 to $87 for crossbreds
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $80 to $115 for crossbreds or $88 to $130 for Merino’s
Wethers were in shorter supply with medium weights $40 to $56
Light export up to 24kg dressed up to $88
With export weights over 24kg dressed $85 to $102
