Fat Cattle Report

Good morning everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the third week of July 2023.

Tallied numbers this week included –

  3900 fat cattle
17500 lambs
10300 mutton
    300 store cattle

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a larger number on offer, with most categories well represented.  The market in general was fully firm to 10 cents dearer for most categories on what was a solid market.

Young weaner steers to restockers, 264 to 359 cents, while the heifer portion also to restockers saw sales between 230 and 290 cents, with a large majority in that 260 – 270 mark.

Suitable yearling steers to feedlotters under 400kg 295 – 352 cents, with heavier drafts over 400kg 260 – 280 for the crossbred types or 290 – 355 for the British types with a lot around that 320 cents.

Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters 250 – 300 cents with the fresher forward drafts making up to 310 cents.  Heavier drafts over 400kg to kill, were in short supply but saw sales between 302 and 328 cents, with feeder types 265 – 305 cents.

Into export sales with prime export steers 285 – 311 cents, with the heifer portion seeing sales between 245 and 258 cents.  Heavier feeder steers up to 500kg 296 – 328 cents.

Cows were a little bit off the pace this week with boner cows 112 – 140 cents. Medium weights 155 – 200 cents with a large majority around that 180 cent mark, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 203 and 225 cents and topping at 236 cents for a pen of very clean prime Santa cows.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where like the cattle it was a larger number on offer with all categories well represented.  Unfortunately, the market was $5-$10 cheaper for all categories and could’ve been more for the plainer drafts regardless of breed.

Into older crossbred sales firstly, light kill types up to 16kg dressed $35 – $60.  
Up to 18kg dressed $50 – $66.  
Light trade $65 – $86.  
Medium trade $80 – $110 with a large majority falling between $90 and $100.  
Heavy trade $110 – $132
Light export $125 – $143 with plenty around $130 with drafts up to 30kg dressed $133 – $141,
With super heavies well over 30kg dressed $150 – $171.

To Merino lambs which were tough to say the least, with light weights up to 16kg dressed $34 – $55  
Up to 18kg dressed $35 – $58
Light trade $65 – $82
Medium trade $81 – $101 but the biggest majority fell in the $90 bracket
Heavy trade $92 – $118
With export weights in limited supply making up to $125.

Into the mutton pens now where there was a larger number on offer with the market only just firm to $5 cheaper.

Light boner ewes $15 – $22
Boner ewes $34 – $74 with a lot around that $50 mark
Medium weights $63 – $92, with a lot around that $80 mark for Merino’s and $46 – $85 for crossbreds
With export weights $86 – $115 for Merino’s or $74 – $110 for crossbreds.

Light boner wethers $39 – $75 with the majority around the $50 mark
Medium weights $70 – $98 for Merino’s or $59 - $70 for crossbreds
With super heavy export weights $103 – $123 for crossbreds and up to $135 for Merino’s.
