Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon everybody this is John Lindsay from Carter Lindsay & weber with our last market report out of Dubbo for 2024.
Tallied numbers this week included -
4000 cattle
16500 lambs &
10000 sheep
Into the cattle pens firstly where there was a similar number on what was still a very strong market - the only reason for any cheaper trends was quality driven.
Light vealer steers to restockers under 300 kg were in high demand seeing sales between 350 - 435 cents with the heifer portion 320 - 370 cents.
Yearling steers under 400kg to feeders were also in high demand seeing sales mainly between 320 - 400 cents with some Angus drafts getting up to 410 cents. Heavier drafts over 400 kg saw most sales to feedlotters 335 - 365 cents generally with the more forward drafts up to 387 cents. Kill drafts saw sales between 335 - 390 cents.
Yearling heifers under 400 kg suitable to feed 310 - 358 cents for the forward drafts or 270 - 318 cents for the plainer drafts , with kill drafts 320 - 355 cents. Heavier drafts over 400 kg to kill were shorter supplied seeing sales between 305 - 340 cents.
Into export sales with young bullocks to kill, in shorter supply but what was yarded was very good, 328 - 355 cents with mature age bullocks 290 - 330 cents.
Export kill heifers were also strong, but they were good 315 - 335 cents.
Cows were fully firm to a touch dearer on last week’s strong market with boner cows 195 - 266 cents & mainly around 230 cents with strong competition from restockers.
Medium weights 220 -265 for the majority with the fresher drafts up to 290 cents with heavy high yielding cows 275 - 300 cents mainly & making up to 308 cents for the very top end.
Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following results for clients this week -
For a local vendor forward Angus steers to feedlotters that weighed 420 kg for 385 cents to return $1610.
For the Atkinson family off “ Wonga “ who sold well bred young Santa steers that weighed 346 kg for 415 cents to backgrounders & these top young steers come back at $1435.
The Baker family off “ Ercildoon “ sold Santa / Angus x heifers to feedlotters for 330 cents they weighed 345 kg to come back at $1140.
At Gulargambone for Jason Beck who sold prime Hereford cows for 300 cents they weighed 745 kg & these top cows came back at $2240.
The O’Neill family off “ Nellady “ sold well-bred Hereford steers to feedlotters for 354 cents they weighed 478 kg & these top steers came back at $1690.
While the Weber family off “ Chelsea “ at Tottenham sold feeder steers for 399 cents they weighed 402 kg, and these top steers returned $1600.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb market now where there was a larger no on the back of a rain affected week last week.
The market in general was $5 - $10 dearer for all categories & could’ve been more in places on the better end.
To crossbreds firstly with light kill types up to 16kg dressed $88 - $110 up to 18kg dressed $112 - $125
Light trade $146 - $170
Medium trade $140 -$190 but mainly around $170
Heavy trade / light export $190 -$220
Export weights $223 - $240
Drafts up to 30 kg dressed $245 - $280 with super heavies over 30 kg dressed $250 - $286
To Merinos, lightweights up to 16kg dressed 100 - $120
Up to 18 kg dressed 120 - $135
Light trade 146 - $170
Medium trade 159 - $185
Heavy trade / light export 190 -$224
Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following lamb results for clients this week -
Locally for Greg & Vicki O’Conner who sold export weight 2nd X lambs, with a beautiful 6-week skin & these top lambs made $286.
John Blease sold sold light trade weight Aussie White lambs in a 3 score condition for $145.
Pete Edwards & Amanda Dunn off “ Tubbavilla ‘ at Coolabah sold export weight Merino lambs with a fresh 6-week skin in a 3-score condition & these top lambs made $190.
While for a Northern NSW vendor, large framed Merino hoggets in a 3-score condition with an inch skin & well rounded and they made $190.
To the mutton pens where there the quality overall was very good. like the lambs the market was $5 - $10 dearer & could have been more on the medium & heavyweight drafts, with the good quality a big help.
boner ewes $47- $88
medium weights $78 -$115 but mainly around that $100 mark for Merinos
heavy weights $120 - $153 for Merinos or $130 - $143 for crossbreds with super heavies over 30 kg dressed $138 - $172 for Merinos or $123 - $169 for the crossbred portion.
boner wethers $68 - $88
medium weights $95 -$110
with heavy weights $135 - $152.
