Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of November 2024.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  3600 fat cattle
13800 lambs and
  
10200 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a plainer quality of young cattle but still good lines of medium and heavy weight feeders.  There was a limited supply of heavy grown cattle and also cows in a market that sold to stronger trends.

Young kill cattle were 10 cents dearer, with prime steer yearlings topping at 377c/kg while prime heifer yearlings topped at 334c/kg.  

Feeder steers and heifers were 10 – 15 cents dearer with the feeder steers selling from 311 - 398c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 282 - 335c/kg.

Young restockers sold to a stronger demand due to forecast rain throughout QLD and NSW.

Grown steers and heifers were 5 – 10 cents dearer with the prime grown steers making 320 – 340c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 310 – 340c/kg.

Cows were slightly dearer, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 230 - 259c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 258 - 289c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly to Brewarrina for the Carter family of “Wongal”, who sold well bred Santa steers to the backgrounding market for 384 cents, weighing 348kg coming back at $1339.

Down the road to Warren for the Earl family of “Longstowe”, who sold Angus feeder heifers to the northern orders weighing 371kg and bringing 326 cents, making $1212.

Across to Coonamble for the Fitzgerald family of “Carmel”, who sold well bred Charolais cross steers in a fresh condition, to the northern feedlotters for 379 cents, weighing in at 515kg bringing $1952.

Lastly in the same area for the Altus family of “Fermoy”, who sold properly fattened Friesian steers that weighed 665kg and sold to the kill orders for 255 cents, making $1697.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a mixed quality yarding with good runs of well finished shorn trade and heavy weight lambs alongside a fair selection of Dorper’s and Merino’s - with only a limited supply of new season lambs.

The market sold to dearer trends.  The few new season trade lambs sold to $214 and averaged 880c/kg, while the heavyweights topped at $230.  

Shorn trade weight lambs were $15 - $20 stronger with most selling from $172 - $220 and averaging 870 – 890c/kg.  

Heavy weight lambs were $10 dearer with old lambs 24kg – 30kg selling from $205 - $233, with lambs over 30kg ranging from $220 - $265 to average 875c/kg.

Best heavy Dorper topped at $246.

Trade Merino lambs were $15 dearer selling from $165 - $180 averaging about 720c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Firstly to Walgett for the Pocknell family of “Springvale Station”, who sold well bred Dorper lambs in a fresh 2 & 3 score condition for $167.

Across to Girilambone for the Elder family of “Woorndoo”, who sold very fresh Aussie White suckers, straight off the ewe to the southern kill orders for $202.

Lastly to Baradine for the Purdy family of “Raheen”, who sold extra heavy Aussie White lambs in a 4 score condition to the northern kill orders for $220.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a good quality yarding that saw everything gain $10 - $15/head.

Merino ewes sold from $60 - $148 while the crossbred ewes brought $55 - $130 with the mutton averaging between 340 – 410c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients:

Just a quick quote this week for the Finlay family of “Kinross” at Baradine, who sold extra heavy Aussie White ewes in a 4 score condition to the local exporter for $129.

Well that about wraps it up for another week - just a reminder that the last store cattle sale of the year will be next Friday the 6th of December. The last prime cattle sale will be Thursday the 12th of December and the final sheep sale will be Monday the 16th of December.

The first sale of the year will be a sheep sale on Monday the 6th of January and the first cattle sale will be Thursday the 9th of January, with the first store cattle sale to be Friday the 7th of February.

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
