Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon, this is Campbell Rose taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 4th week of November 2024.
Tallied numbers this week included –
5500 fat cattle
8700 lambs
7700 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers remained steady and quality was a little plainer. There were good numbers of yearlings and there was more lighter weight cattle yarded. Feeders were strong on most weights and grades but were noticeably stronger on the lighter weights to feed or background.
The grown steers and heifers were well supplied with plenty of weight and cover. There was a good source of heavy cows yarded and plenty of 2 and 3 scores. The market sold to firm and dearer trends.
The lighter feeders or backgrounder cattle were 25 – 30 cents stronger, with steers selling from 320-399c/kg and heifers selling from 290-326c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers were 3 cents stronger due to the northern push for crossbred cattle, selling from 338-380c/kg for the medium weights and heavy weights reaching 377c/kg. Heifers to feed lifted 4 – 6 cents with medium and heavy weights ranging from 260-326c/kg.
Grown steers and bullocks were firm selling from 280-342c/kg. Prime heavy grown heifers were also similar selling 270-330c/kg.
Heavy cows were back slightly with the heavy weights ranging from 250-285c/kg and the medium weight 2 scores were 4 cents dearer on average ranging from 225-252c/kg.
Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -
Firstly, Ollie and Brooke Holland at Wellington, sold heavy Preg tested empty Angus heifers for 316 cents, weighing 625kg and returning $1976.
The O’Neill Family of ‘Nellady’ at Trangie, sold Hereford bulls for 301 cents, weighing 1020kg and returning $3072.
Jim and Abigail McLaughlin, of ‘Merryanbone North’ Nyngan sold vendor bred Angus steers for 330c, weighing 565kg, and returning $1,867.
And lastly, Peter Hewett of ‘Hillview’ at Tottenham, who sold prime heavy Charolais cross cows for 276 cents, weighing an impressive 813kg and returning $2245.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where numbers were back due to decent rain in the area but quality remained good. The number of fresh new season lambs were limited with more secondary light lambs penned. There were a few new season trade weight lambs but limited heavy shorn lambs. The market was firm with all usual buyers operating.
New season store lambs sold from $78 - $130. Trade weights sold from $150 - $210. Heavy lambs reaching $233. Old trade lambs were firm with most ranging from $145 - $187. Heavy lambs lifted $4-$5, selling from $200 - $238. Extra heavies topped it at $269. There were a few larger runs of trade Merino’s which were $10 stronger reaching $147. The best of the hoggets made $184.
Mutton numbers fell and the quality was good with plenty of medium and heavy weights. Store Merino’s sold from $51 - $79 and heavy Merino’s reached a top of $149, with the crossbred ewes reaching $123.
Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -
Firstly, Greg and Vicki O’Connor of Dubbo, sold heavy crossbred ewes for $111.
Dave Campbell of Dubbo, sold trade weight Aussie White lambs in a 3 score condition for $150.
Ben Bright of Dubbo sold Dorper lambs for $160.
And lastly, Shaun and Phillipa O’Brien of ‘Nebinedulla’ at Bollon, sold heavy trade Dorper lambs for $176.
Well that about wraps it up for another week, don’t forget our last store sale for the year is scheduled for Friday 6th December, 2024.
Also, just a few dates to keep in mind – the last cattle sale of the year will be Thursday 12th December and the last sheep sale will be Monday 16th December, 2024.
The first sales of the New Year will be a sheep sale on Monday 6th January 2025 and the first cattle sale will be Thursday 9th January, 2025.

Applications open for producers and agents
All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.
Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.
Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.
Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
