Fat Cattle Report
Good morning, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the last week of February, 2025. Tallied numbers this week included -
6000 fat cattle
14000 lambs and
14000 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers remained strong with the combination of the continued dry and solid markets. It was a good quality yarding with plenty of heavy weight and feeder cattle on offer.
Young cattle to the trade remained firm with prime vealers selling from 296 - 380c/kg. Feeder steers were 8 cents stronger selling from 320 - 396c/kg depending on breed and weight, while the feeder heifers lost 10 cents and sold from 255 - 337c/kg.
Grown steers gained 4 cents to sell from 310 - 390c/kg, while the grown heifers lost 3 cents to sell from 308 - 360c/kg.
Cows had the biggest fall this week, back 15 cents with the better D3/4 cows selling from 302 - 330c/kg. The best heavy bull reached a top of 342 cents.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -
Locally for Kim Grattan of ‘Mentone’ at Tomingley, who sold Angus steers for 380 cents, they weighed 390kg and came back at $1482.
Matt & Kylie Whale of ‘Glenroy’ at Wellington, sold Angus cross steers for 375 cents, they weighed 400kg and returned $1502.
The McWhirter family of ‘Springfield’ at Tooraweenah, sold Friesian bullocks for 310 cents, thy weighed 710kg to come back at $2204.
The Hanigan family of ‘Hollywood’ at Coonamble, sold Angus cows for 314 cents, they weighed 709kg and returned $2226.
The McKay Family of ‘Winnabri’ at Trangie, sold Shorthorn cows for 311 cents, they weighed 650kg to return $2024.
The Weber Family of ‘Chelsea’ at Tottenham, sold Angus steers for 375 cents, weighing 391kg to return $1469.
To Nyngan now for Mitch & Sarah Butler of ‘Jambaroo’, who sold Hereford cross steers for 363 cents, weighing 478kg to return $1737.
David & Terese Carter of ‘Wilgaree’, sold heavy Angus cows for 315 cents, weighing 739kg to return $2328.
And lastly for Soph and Jed Elder of ‘Woorndoo’, who sold crossbred steers for 356 cents, weighing 420kg to come back at $1498.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into Into the lamb pens now, where a quality yarding of heavy runs of lambs along with neat trade weights greeted buyers in a mostly dearer market.
Lightweight lambs gained $4 to sell from $93 -$118
Light trade weight lambs lost $6 to sell from $127 - $154
Medium to heavy trade weight lambs remained firm to sell from $162 - $217
Heavy weight lambs lifted $8 to sell from $195 - $255
Extra heavy lambs sold from $252 - $288.
Merino lambs sold to a top of $144, while hoggets reached a top of $190.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for some of their clients -
Locally for the Quinn family of ‘Caroo’ at Dubbo, who sold Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition, to the domestic kill for $190.
The Whillock family of ‘Maxland’ at Geurie, sold 2nd cross lambs in a 4 score condition, with a 2 inch skin for $234.
Craig & Kerry Walters of ‘Plain Creek’ at Wongarbon, sold crossbred lambs in a 4 score condition, with an inch skin for $255.
Vicki Parker of ‘Gooyong Park’ at Warren, sold crossbred lambs in a 3 score condition, with an inch skin for $205.
The Goldsmith family of ‘Urungie’ at Coonamble, sold crossbred lambs in a 3/4 score condition, with a half inch skin for $220.
Scott & Jane Johnston of ‘Glenelg’ at Gongolgon, sold Dorper lambs in a 2 score condition for $139.
And lastly for the O’Brien family of ‘Nebinedulla’ at Bollon, who sold Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition for $136.
Into the mutton pens now, where the market lifted across all categories.
Light ewes sold from $45 - $60
Medium weight ewes sold from $72 - $98
Heavy weight ewes sold from $110 - $160
Light wethers sold from $68 - $82
Medium weight wethers sold from $92 - $125
Heavy weight wethers sold from $140 - $187.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for some of their clients -
The McFetridge family of ‘Tathra’ at Collie, sold crossbred ewes in a 3 score condition with an inch skin for $120.
Lastly for The Hoare family of ‘Karabran’ at Nyngan, who sold SAMM ewes in a heavy 4 score condition, with an inch skin for $145.
