Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 1st week of July 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included –

3800 fat cattle
18000 lamb  
5000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a very good quality yarding with a selection of all grades suiting all buyers.

Young kill cattle were dearer with prime vealers topping at 380c/kg.  Prime yearlings brought 334 - 396c/kg.  Feeder steers and heifers were firm to dearer.  Feeder steers selling from 300 - 410c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 262 - 360c/kg.  Young restockers sold to a stronger demand, with steers selling to a top of 420c/kg and 345c/kg for heifers.

Grown steers and heifers were dearer with the prime grown steers making 280 – 360c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 270 – 352c/kg.  Cows were up to 30 cents dearer in places, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 175 - 255c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 260 - 304c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients-

  • Firstly to Wanaaring for the Lindsay family, who sold well bred Santa cross steers to the feeder market for 322 cents, weighing 418kg making $1346.

  • Down the highway to Nyngan for the Burley family off ‘Woodlands Station’, who sold trim Charolais cross cows that weighed 600kg, they made 275 cents bringing $1650.

  • Lastly to the Geurie district for the Whillock family of ‘Maxland’, who sold properly fat Angus cows that made 300 cents, they weighed up at 657kg coming back at over $1973.



Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a good quality yarding with good runs of well finished heavy weight lambs alongside a fair selection of trade weights.

 Lightweight lambs to kill were dearer with the 12 – 18kg 2 scores making from $107 - $131. Trade weight lambs were also dearer with the 18 – 24kg making from $130 - $180 to average between 715 – 868c/kg.  Heavy weight lambs were dearer with lambs 24 – 30kg selling from $199 - $238, while lambs over 30kg brought from $233 - $281 to average 825c/kg.  Merino lambs 26 – 30kgs sold up to $227 bring 775c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients -

  • Firstly to Walgett for the Pocknell family of ‘Springvale Station’, who sold heavy weight Dorper lambs to the southern orders for $195.

  • At Nyngan for the Boland family of ‘Pepper Farm’, who sold fresh trade weight Dorper lambs for $185.

  • In the same district for the Hoare family of ‘Bel-Air’, who sold well bred crossbred lambs with a fresh 6 week skin, selling to the local exporter for $218.

  • Down the road to Trangie for The McKay family of ‘Winnabri’, who sold well bred Merino wether lambs in a 3 score condition, with a 1 ½ inch skin for $190.

  • To Narromine now for the Baker family of ‘Ercildoon’, who sold well bred Aussie White lambs to the southern exporter for $210.

  • Lastly in the Geurie district for the Whillock family of ‘Maxland’, who sold well bred crossbred lambs in a 3 & 4 score condition, weighing over 60kg to the exports for $246.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a good quality yarding that saw everything sell to dearer trends.

Light Merino ewes sold from $66 - $76, medium weights $79- $106 while the heavier weights topped at $140.  Crossbred ewes topped at $155 and the Merino wethers made $118 - $132.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients -

  • Firstly to Walgett for the Pocknell family of ‘Springvale Station’, who sold well bred heavy weight Dorper ewes to the exporters for $100.

  • Across to Bourke for the Fraser family of ‘Woodland Station’, who sold, well bred crossbred ewes in a 4 score condition making $146.

  • Lastly to Wongarbon for the Kelly family of ‘Blackdowns’, who sold heavy crossbred ewes with a 2 inch skin for $145.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
