Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of July 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included –

2500 fat cattle
31200 lamb
12300 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a drop in numbers but quality was better with the heavy cattle selling to strong competition.

Young kill cattle were dearer where prime yearlings topped at 378 cents for steers and 368 cents for the heifers.  Feeder steers and heifers were firm to dearer.  Feeder steers selling from 300 - 410c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 262 - 330c/kg. Young restockers sold to a stronger demand, with steers selling to a top of 512c/kg and 350c/kg for heifers.

Grown steers and heifers were 10 cents dearer, with the prime grown steers making 330 – 380c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 270 – 366c/kg.  

Cows were up to 15 cents dearer in places, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows averaging 260c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 260 - 335c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

  • Locally in the Dubbo district for the Koerstz family, who sold well bred Santa cross steers to the kill orders for 379 cents, weighing 521kg making $1978.

  • Lastly in the same district for the Noonan family, who sold Charolais cross steers that weighed 485kg, they made 338 cents bringing $1640.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where we saw more numbers but quality was lifted as well, with good runs of well finished heavy weight lambs alongside a fair selection of trade weights.

 Lightweight lambs to kill were dearer with the 12kg – 18kg 2 scores making from $75 - $126.
Trade weight lambs were also dearer with the 18kg – 24kg making from $130 - $205 to average between 780 – 840c/kg.  
Heavy weight lambs were dearer with lambs 24kg – 26kg selling from $171 - $228, with lambs up to 30kg bringing from $199 - $248 to average 840c/kg. While the extra heavyweights over 30kg made $253 - $300.  
Heavyweight Merino lambs topped at $229.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

  • Firstly to Narromine for the Smith family of ‘Kurrajong Park’, who sold heavy weight crossbred lambs with a 6 weeks skin, in a 3 & 4 score condition to the export orders for $253.

  • Locally for the Yeo family of ‘Lambar’, who sold fresh heavyweight crossbred lambs in a 3 & 4 score condition for $254.

  • Lastly in the Wellington district for the Whale family of ‘Glenroy’, who sold well bred trade weight crossbred lambs in a 3 score condition, to the domestic orders for $203.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in an increased yarding with good quality that saw everything sell to dearer trends.

Merino ewes sold from $60 - $142, while heavy weight crossbred ewes brought $128 - $148 with most sheep ranging between 430 – 470c/kg.

Just a quick quote this week for the Fraser family of ‘Woodland Station’, at Bourke, who sold well bred Merino wethers in a 4 score condition making $137.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Key dates for livestock owners

1 January 2025

  • Mandatory tagging with eID for all sheep and farmed goats born from this date, prior to leaving the property of birth

  • All eIDs on sheep and farmed goats moved between properties must be recorded and the movement uploaded in the NLIS database

1 January 2027

  • Mandatory eIDs required for all sheep and farmed goats prior to leaving any property

  • Animals that stay on the same property for their lifetime do not need to be tagged with an eID

Sheep and Goat eID Tag Discount Program

The NSW Government has announced a tag discount program that will assist sheep and farmed goat producers as the sheep and goat industry transitions to eID tags from 1 January 2025.

The new tag program will provide a discount to 2025 NLIS-accredited white eID devices when purchasing from the retailer or manufacturer. This includes eID tags and leg bands.

The tag discount amount will be $0.76 per tag applied to eligible eID devices purchased between 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2025 or until funds are exhausted.

Once the tag discount program is in place, producers will not have to complete any additional paperwork to participate in accessing discounted tags.
