Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the third week out of July 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included-

3100 fat cattle
30000 lamb
7000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, there was a larger number on offer on what was a rain affected market. The market in general was cheaper from most categories with the exception of export kill cattle and in particular steers and heifers, with the cheaper rates mainly due to quality.

Yearling steers under 300kg to feedlotters, 320-408c with a large majority in the 380c mark, heavier drafts over 400kg to feedlotters, 368c-400c for the mainly British or Angus drafts with crossy types 340-370c.

Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters 260-320c, but they had to be fresh and forward to be over 300c, with heavier drafts over 400kg 308-344c generally, with the fresher drafts mainly being Angus making up to 360c with the crossy types 250-280c.


Into export sales:

Feeder steers up to 500kg 336-396c, with heavier drafts over 500kg in shorter supply 320-346c, in mainly being crossy types.

Kill types were strong, seeing sales 354-387c.

Heavy killable heifers were also in high demand, seeing sales between 250-347c.

Boner cows 160-174c, medium weights 232-290c with a big chunk around that 260c mark, with very fresh cows making up to 305c with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 290-325c and topping at 336c.


Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following cattle results for their clients this week:

  • Locally for Billy Carter off “Strathmore”, who sold prime 6 tooth Charolais X heifers for 330c, they weighed 850kg to come back at $2800.

  • Mark and Trudy Altus off “Albion Hills” at Wongarbon sold Charolais X cows in prime condition for 320c, they weighed 665kg and came back at $2130.

  • Jason Beck at Gulargambone sold Angus X heifers to the kill butchers for 378c, they weighed 415kg to come back at $1570.

  • Kim Grattan sold yearling angus steers to feedlotters for 408c, they weighed 344kg and these steers came back at $1400.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the sheep pens now where there was a large number on offer, the market in general was very strong with all categories selling to a fully firm and in most cases, dearer market.

Into XB sales firstly, with light kill types up to 18kg dressed $130-$158, up to 18kg dressed, $100-$154. Light trade $144-$175. Medium trade $150-185. Heavy trade/light export $170-212 , with plenty around the $190 mark. With drafts up to 26kg dressed $200-246 with super heavies up to 30kg dressed $210-282 with a large majority around that $240 mark. With super heavies over 30kg dressed $235-305 with the majority around the $280 mark.

To Merino sales with light weights up to 16kg dressed $85-140, up to 18kg dressed $80-154. Light trade $135-170. Medium trade $156-186. Heavy trade light export $174-210, but they had to be good to be over $200. With drafts up to 26kg dressed $188-247.


Carter Lindsay and Weber had the following lamb results for their clients:

  • For the Whillock family off “Maxland” who sold export weight 2 ND X lambs with an inch skin in a 3-score condition, and these top lambs made $278.

  • Paul and Carmel Quinn off “Caroo” who sold export weight dorper lambs in a 3-score condition, and these top lambs made $212.

  • Mark and Trudy Altus off “Albion Hills” sold Aussie White export weight lambs in a 3-score condition, and these top lambs made $234.

  • At Baradine for Scott Howe off “Nework” who sold export weight dorset X lambs 6 week skin in a 4 score condition and these top lambs made $276.

  • The Hoarder off “Cartref” who sold trade weight dorper lambs in a 3-score condition and these top lambs made $179.

  • At Warren for the McKay family off “Winnabri” who sold export weight Merino lambs in a 3-score condition with an 8 week skin and these top lambs made $175.

  • The Brian family off “New Park” sold light trade weight 1st X lambs with a 6 week skin and these top lambs made $150.

  • While at Girilambone for Tom and Margot Elder off “Woorndoo” who sold tidy fresh trade weight Merino lambs with an inch skin and these top lambs made $175.


To the mutton pens, where like the lambs, the market was very strong and seeing rises between $10 and $15.

Light boner ewes $60-88. Boner ewes $55-85. Medium weights up to 24kg dressed $81-107 for the majority of the Merinos with the fresher rounder types making up to $146 with a heap around that $120 mark. With export weights $128-168 for XB or $130-168 for Merinos, with super heavies over 30kg dressed $150-192 for XB or $178-185 for Merinos.

Medium weight wethers for the plainer types $85-95 with fresher types $129-135 with export weights over 30kg dressed and mainly all being XB seeing sales up to $190.

Just some quick quotes for Carter Lindsay & Weber clients:

For Ben and Lianne Mannix off “Gumbooka” who sold export weight dorper ewes in prime condition for $150.

While for a local vendor, large frame XB ewes with a 2 inch skin in a 3 score condition and they made $170.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
