Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Campbell Rose taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 4th week of July 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included –

5040 fat cattle 
36700 lamb
14000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers increased and quality was good. There were plenty of well finished grown steers and heifers, also a spike in cow numbers. The feeders were mixed and quality and condition was mostly breed related. Overall the yarding showed an increase in the feeder job, but a little softer for cows and grown cattle.

 Weaners were limited, but overall 10 cents stronger. Feeder steers averaged 10 - 20 cents stronger. Medium weight feeder steers sold from 326 - 420 cents, while heavy weight feeders sold from 364 - 422 cents. Feeder heifers were also 10 – 15 cents stronger, selling from 300 – 360 cents.

 Heavy trade cattle were firm ranging from 300 – 379 cents. Prime grown steers and bullocks were 5 cents softer, selling from 320 – 380 cents. Heavy heifers were 10 – 20 cents cheaper, selling from 297 – 324 cents. Cows were 10 – 15 cents softer, with the heavy cows selling from 275 – 316 cents, with the medium weight 2 scores selling from 210 cents to PTIC cows that reached 283 cents. 


Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

  • Firstly, Ben & Cloe Lawson of ‘Monte Carlo’ at Stuart Town, sold Angus heifers for 352 cents, weighing 332kg and returning $1170.

  • Matt and Kylie Whale of ‘Glenroy’ at Wellington, sold Angus feeder heifers for 320 cents, weighing 437kg and returning $1400.

  • James and Michele Hegarty at Coonamble, sold heavy Shorthorn cross bullocks for 354 cents, weighing 735kg and returning $2600.

  • And lastly for The Weber Family of ‘Gwando’ at Tottenham, who sold feeder Angus steers for 418 cents, weighing 432kg and returning $1800.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where numbers jumped and quality was a little more mixed. Light lambs were better supplied and there was also a better line up for trade and heavy weights. Extra heavy lambs were limited in supply, with the market selling to softer trends, with the bulk of lambs falling $15 - $20.

 The 2 score processing lambs sold from $88 - $135.  Lighter trade lambs sold from $136 -$196 and the heavy trades selling from $182 - $214.  Heavy lambs sold from $202 - $253. Extra heavy lambs were limited, but topped at $275. Merino trade lambs sold from $162 - $207.  Heavy Merino lambs sold from $200 - $233.  Heavy hoggets topped at $180.

Mutton numbers lifted and the quality again was mixed with the larger yarding. Prices eased $10 on the medium weights, selling from $63 - $124.  The heavy weights fell $25 - $30 with crossbreds selling from $115 - $172 while heavy Merino’s reached $147.


Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -

  • The Simpson Family of ‘Binginbar Farms’ at Gollan, sold trade Merino lambs for $158.

  • The Whillock Family of ‘Maxland’ at Geurie sold heavy crossbred ewes for $172.

  • Lee and Edwina Toohey at Dubbo, sold heavy crossbred lambs for $259.

  • Kelvin Baker of ‘Ercildoon’ at Narromine, sold heavy Australian White hoggets for $180.

  • And lastly, Brad and Sophie Cook of ‘Donola’ at Tottenham, who sold heavy 1st cross lambs for $233.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
