Cattle Report
Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the third week of December, 2023. Tallied numbers this week included –
4100 fat cattle
13000 lambs
12000 mutton.
Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was another decent number on offer due to it being the last cattle sale for 2023. The market in general was only just firm, but in most places particularly on the feeders and backgrounders 10 – 15 cents cheaper on the previous week’s much stronger market.
Light vealer steers to restockers, 260 to 328 cents with the heifer portion 168 -296 cents. Heavier steer vealers to restockers 214 – 334 cents and mainly around 260 cents, with the same heifer portion 186 – 270 cents.
Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters, 250 – 314 cents, with the majority struggling to make over 300 cents. With heavier drafts over 400kg 276 - 310 cents with a large majority around the 280 – 290 cent mark. With an isolated kill sale seeing prices between 240 and 300 cents.
Yearling heifers under 400kg mainly to feeders 210 – 280 cents, but the large majority were around that 250 cent mark. Heavier drafts over 400kg to feeders 238 – 260 cents.
Into export sales, feeder steers up to 500kg 170 – 250 cents mainly, with the top end mainly being Angus drafts making up to 296 cents. With kill drafts in shorter supply, seeing sales between 190 and 232 cents. Export heifers up to 500kg to feed 155 – 244 cents, with kill drafts 190 – 230 cents. With heavier drafts over 500kg to kill 190 – 248 cents and they were in shorter supply.
Into cow sales, light boner cows 90 – 120 cents. Medium weights 130 – 188 cents for the plainer drafts or 155 – 193 for the rounder types. With heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 178 and 220 cents, with the biggest majority around that 195 cent mark.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where there was a similar number on offer to last week with the market at least $20 dearer for all good quality lambs, particularly for your trade and export weights, regardless of breed.
To the suckers firstly, with light trade weights to kill up to 20kg dressed $80 – $100, with restocker drafts up to $85.
Medium trade $92 – $120, but had to be good to get over $100.
With heavy trade weights $138 – $170
With export weights over 24kg dressed in shorter supply, but what was yarded was very heavy seeing sales up to $238.
Into older cross bred sales, light kill drafts up to 16kg dressed $48 to $76
Up to 20kg dressed $80 - $100,
Medium trade $103 – $145 with the biggest majority around $120
Heavy trade $153 – $185
With export weights up to 26kg dressed seeing sales between $169 – $214
With super heavies over 26kg dressed $195 – $225 generally and this week topping at $246.
To the Merino’s, up to 16kg dressed $35 – $42
Up to 18kg dressed $40 – $60
Medium trade $66 – $88
Heavy trade $109 – $142 with a big majority around the $120 mark.
Into the mutton pens now where the market was $5 – $10 cheaper.
Boner ewes $22 – $26
Medium weights $28 – $60 for Merino’s with a big majority around the $50 mark.
Export weights over 24kg dressed $46 - $90 with the majority around the $70 mark, with the cross bred portion $40 – $70.
Boner wethers, medium weights $36 – $62
Export weights $54 – $60
With super heavies over 30kg dressed, up to $90 for Merino’s or $66 – $76 for crossbreds.

Sheep and goat electronic identification
Applications are open for producers and agents
All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.
Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.
Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.
Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
