Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of December 2023.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  6300 fat cattle
14800 lambs  
  6400 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where the 2nd last sale of the year saw a lot more cattle than pervious weeks.  It was a pretty good quality yarding with a selection of all grades suiting all buyers.

Young kill cattle were firm to 5 cents cheaper with prime vealers topping at 282c/kg.  Prime yearlings brought 249 - 280c/kg.  Light weight feeder steers and heifers were 10 – 15 cents cheaper while the heavy feeders were unchanged.  Feeder steers selling from 262 - 333c/kg while the feeder heifers made 222 - 308c/kg.  

Young restockers were sold to a weaker demand compared to last week’s very strong market, with steers selling to a top of 395c/kg and 345c/kg for heifers.

Grown steers and heifers were 5 – 10 cents dearer with the prime grown steers making 240 – 269c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 225 – 258c/kg.  Cows were unchanged, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 70 - 218c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 204 - 241c/kg to average around 229c/kg.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a mixed quality yarding with good runs of well finished heavy weight lambs alongside a fair selection of trade weights.

Lightweight lambs to kill were $6 dearer with the 12kg – 18kg 2 scores making from $36 - $68.  
Trade weight lambs were sold around firm.  
Trade weight old lambs 20kg – 24kg made $76 - $154 to average between 560 – 600c/kg.  
Heavy weight lambs were $5 - $10 dearer with old lambs 24kg – 30kg selling from $130 - $196, with lambs over 30kg ranging from $170 - $202 to average 595c/kg.  
Merino lambs were unchanged with trade weight Merino lambs selling from $69 - $98.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a good quality yarding that saw everything gain $10.

Merino ewes sold from $30 - $89 while the crossbred ewes brought $25 - $82 and the Merino wethers topped at $96.

Well that about wraps it up for another week, don’t forget the last cattle sale this year is next Thursday December 14th, with the last sheep and lamb sale being Monday December 18th.

The Dubbo sales will resume in the new year on Monday the 8th of January 2024.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
