Fat Cattle Report
Good morning, everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the first week of February 2024.
Tallied numbers this week included –
4400 fat cattle
11500 lambs
9000 grown sheep &
800 store cattle currently under the hammer.
Into the cattle pens firstly where there was a larger number on offer with all categories represented with a strong field of regular buyers. The market in general was 20 cents dearer for most categories with the exception of cows which were fully firm on last week’s strong rates.
Vealer steers to restockers 340 - 436 cents, with the heifer portion 314-395 cents and mainly being the lighter weights.
Yearling steers under 400kg to restockers 338 – 399 cents, with the large majority around that 380 cents, with fresher forward mainly Angus drafts seeing sales between 346 - 414 cents. Heavier drafts over 400kg 325 - 395 cents, with plainer restocker drafts seeing sales up to 410 cents.
Yearling heifers under 400kg to feed 290 – 341 cents, with backgrounder types 310 – 343 cents. Heavier drafts over 400kg to feed 298 – 360 cents, with a big majority around that 330 cent mark, with backgrounder types 270-340 cents.
Into export sales, heavy feeder steers over 500kg live, 310 – 328 cents, but mainly around that 310-320 cent mark, with young kill drafts mainly being 2 and 4 tooths, 288 -315 cents with the majority around 308 cents.
Export feeder heifers up to 500kg 295-336 cents, with kill drafts 270 – 314 cents, with the majority around 280 cents.
Boner cows 150 -180 cents, medium weights 220 – 260 cents, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 240 and 280 cents and this week topping at 295 cents.
Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following cattle results for clients this week -
Locally for Dean & Annette Walton of “Gungalman” at Dubbo, sold forward Angus steers to feedlotters for 390 cents, they weighed 440kg and these top steers came back at $1710.
Rod & Kay Crothers of “Grandchester” at Mendooran, sold Limousin cross steers to feedlotters for 375 cents, they weighed 430kg to come back at $1600.
While for John & Mary Burley of “Woodlands Station” at Nyngan, who sold Charolais cross yearling steers for 354 cents, they weighed 355kg for $1255.

Into Into the lamb pens now where like the cattle it was a stronger market, with some good quality lambs yarded regardless of breed.
Into crossbred sales firstly, with lightweight restocker types $48 - $76
Light drafts up to 18 kgs dressed $92 – $105
Medium trade $110 – $120
Heavy trade $128 – $168, with the majority around $150
Light export $165 – $188
With drafts up to 26kg dressed $175 – $195
With super heavies either side of 30kg dressed $195 – $238, with this week’s top price getting to $247.
To Merino sales, light kill types up to 18kg dressed $88 – $98
Light trade $112 – $120
Medium trade up to $125
With heavy trade $126 – $140
Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following lamb results for their clients -
For the Willock family of “Maxland” at Geurie, who sold second cross export weight lambs with a very tidy quarter inch skin, in a 4 score condition and these top lambs made $192.
Kel Baker of “Ercildoon” at Narromine, sold export weight Aussie White lambs in a 4 score condition and these top lambs made $190.
To Nyngan for the Hoare family of “Karabran”, who sold SAMM lambs with a fresh 8 week skin, in a 3 score condition and these top lambs made $170.
The Butler family of “Jambaroo”, sold export weight 1st cross lambs with an inch skin, in a 3 score condition and these top lambs made $194.
While for Ben and Liarne Mannix of “Gumbooka” at Bourke, who sold tidy trade weight Dorper lambs, well rounded for $146.
To the sheep pens now, where the market was fully firm on last weeks strong market.
Light Boner ewes $35 - $46
Medium weights $44 - $77
Heavy weights $53 – $92 for Merino’s or $64 – $85 for crossbreds
Drafts up to 30kg dressed $85 - $115 for Merino’s or $74 – $100 for crossbreds
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $100 – $126 for crossbreds or $110 – $125 for Merino’s.
Boner wethers in short supply $45 – $50
Medium weights $59 – $86
With export weights $88 – $100
With super heavies over 30kg dressed and mainly all Merino’s $103 - $129.
Just some quick quotes for Carter Linday & Weber clients this week –
To the Marra for Simon and Kelly Earl of “Longstowe”, who sold large frame Merino ewes with a quarter inch skin to the exporters and these top ewes made $113.
To Nyngan for the Hoare family of “Karabran”, who sold large framed heavy weight SAMM ewes in prime condition, to the exporters for $125.
While at Tottenham for Brian and Maree Plummer of “Trigoona”, who sold light export weight Merino ewes with an inch skin for $80.
