Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of February 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included –

4300 fat cattle
22400 lamb
17800 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there were more numbers of crossbred & Bos Indicus cattle penned.  In what was a mixed yarding that saw weaker trends across all grades.  With prices falling between 20 – 30 cents in almost all categories.   

Light and medium weight weaner steers topped at 404c/kg, while the heifer portion topped out at 322c/kg.  Light weight feeder steers sold for 276 – 380c/kg, while heavy feeder steers sold from 268 - 384c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 252 - 295c/kg.

Heavy well finished young cattle to kill sold from 260 – 290c/kg.  Prime grown steers made between 260 – 326c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 263 – 280c/kg.

Cows were up to 20 cents cheaper, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 152 - 222c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 220 - 248c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly to Nyngan for the Jackson Family of “Bogan River Downs”, who sold heavy Angus feeder steers weighing 495kg for 325 cents making $1611.

To Tooraweenah for the McWhirter Family off “Springfield”, who sold Angus feeder steers for 344 cents, weighing 453kg coming back at $1560.

Lastly to Yeoval for the Atkinson family off “Wonga”, who sold well bred Santa feeder steers for 358 cents, they weighed 382kg bringing $1369.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a better quality yarding with good runs of well finished heavy weight lambs.

Lightweight lambs to kill were $6 cheaper with light trade 2 scores making from $91 - $116. Trade weight lambs up to 24kg lost $10 - $15 making $98 - $170 to average between 610 – 660c/kg.  Heavy weight lambs were $10 cheaper with old lambs 24kg – 30kg selling from $128 - $192 with lambs over 30kg brought from $217 - $248 to average 700c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Firstly in the Dubbo district for the Altus family, who sold fresh Dorper lambs in a 2 & 3 score condition for $118.

To Wongarbon for the O’Connor Family of “Warren Downs”, who sold heavy weight 2nd cross lambs in a 3 & 4 score condition, to the norther exporter for $219.

Lastly to Geurie for the Whillock family of “Maxland”, who sold well bred trade weight 2nd cross lambs in a 3 score condition with a half inch skin for $178.     

 Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a mixed quality yarding that saw everything lose $15 to $20.

Merino ewes sold from $22 - $82 while the crossbred ewes brought $25 - $88 with most mutton averaging between 180c – 230c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients –

To Brewarrina for the Stendell family of “Ben Avon”, who sold well bred Merino ewes in a 4 score condition with an inch skin to the local exporter for $80.

Lastly to Wellington for the Whale family of “Glenroy”, who sold 1st cross ewes with an inch skin to the southern export for $48.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
