Fat Cattle Report

Good morning everybody, this is John Linday with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the fourth week of February 2024. 

Talllied numbers this week included –

1900 fat cattle
16000 lamb
10000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a smaller number on offer on what was generally a stronger market for all categories. 

Light vealer steers under 200kg to restockers 360 to 396 cents, with heavier drafts 314 to 384 cents, with a large majority in the 360 cent bracket.  Vealer heifers under 200kg to restockers 270 to 291 cents, with heavier drafts 280 to 295 cents. 

Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 340 to 400 cents, with the biggest majority around the 370 cents mark.  With heavier drafts over 400kg 340 to 370 cents, with your Angus drafts around your 365 cent mark and your crossbreds 355 cents, with suitable kill types in short supply seeing sales between 308 and 349 cents.

Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters 276 to 315 cents but mainly in that 290 to 300 cent bracket.  Heavier drafts over 400kg to restockers 206 to 314 cents and mainly around that 300 cent mark, with the feeder drafts 290 to 311 cents.

Into export sales, feeder steers up to 500kg 310 to 338 cents, with drafts over 500kg with kill drafts in short supply but seeing sales between 293 and 307 cents for young bullocks and 250 to 270 cents for mature aged bullocks. 

Boner cows 110 to 140 cents, medium weights 180 to 240 cents with the big majority around the 215 cent mark, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 220 and 248 cents and plenty around that 240 cent mark.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Locally for Kel Baker of “Ercildoon” at Narromine, who sold forward Santa steers to feedlotters for 349 cents, they weighed 420kg and came back at $1460.

The Clatworthy Family of “Mia Mia” at Dubbo, sold prime Charolais cross cows for 248 cents, they weighed 685kg and these top cows came back at $1700.

Kim Grattan sold young Angus feeder steers for 365 cents, they weighed 385kg and they came back at $1405.

While for a Southern Vendor, fresh Santa Angus cross vealer heifers to the restockers made 296 cents, they weighed 260kg and these fresh young calves came back at $775.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where there was a smaller number on offer on what I would call a firm market for most categories and only just. 

Into crossbred lambs firstly, light kill drafts up to 16kg dressed $70 to $100 and mainly around that $90 mark
Up to 18kg dressed $88 to $116
Light trade $100 to $110
Medium trade $104 to $140 with the biggest chunk around the $120 mark
With heavy trade or light export $124 to $158
With drafts up to 26kg dressed $152 to $188
With drafts close to 30kg dressed up to $195

To Merino sales, light kill drafts up to 16kg dressed $52 to $75
Up to 18kg $68 to $102 but the biggest majority was around the $80 mark
Light trade $80 to $90
With Medium trade $130 to $140

To the mutton pens now, where the market was $4 to $8 cheaper.

Boner ewes $24 to $47
Medium weights $39 to $65 for Merino’s and up to $78 with the help of a big skin, with crossbreds $42 to $56
Export weights $56 to $96 for Merino’s with the biggest majority around the $80 mark

Boner wethers in shorter supply but seeing sales between $41 and $50
Medium weights $46 to $87 and mainly around $72

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
