Fat Cattle Report

Good morning everybody, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the last week of February. 

Tallied numbers this week included -

4400 fat cattle
12000 lamb
10000 mutton
2000 store cattle

Into the cattle pens firstly where quality was plainer therefore a limited supply of prime cattle.  There were large runs of Bos Indicus cattle with the usual buyers at the rail and competing in a dearer market.

Feeder steers remained firm to sell from 310-395 cents for the medium weights while the heavy weights ranged from 324-364 cents.  Feeder heifers sold from 260-323 cents.

Grown steers lifted 20 cents this week with heavy weights selling form 280-327 cents while grown heifers sold from 255-300 cents.  Heavy cows were 16 cents stronger with the better D3 and 4 scores selling from 245-272 cents.  The best heavy bull reached a top of 257 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

The Cook Family at Eumungerie, sold Angus steers for 355 cents weighing 436kg to return $1550.

The Atkinson Family of “Wonga” at Yeoval, sold Santa Gertrudis steers for 340 cents, weighing 429kg to return $1458.

The Lawson Family of “ Monte Carlo” at Stuart Town, sold Angus cows for 255 cents, weighing 683kg to return $1743.

The McWhirter Family of “Springfield” at Tooraweenah sold Santa cross cows for 256 cents, weighing 593kg to return $1520.

The Fragar Family of “Talgong ” at Tottenham, sold Red Angus steers for 336 cents, weighing 396kg to return $1330.

The Dewhurst family of “Sarona Downs” at Hermidale, sold Hereford steers for 344 cents, weighing 470kg to return $1617.

And lastly for the Manns Family of “Gidgee” at Cobar, who sold heavy Santa steers for 294 cents, weighing 700kg to return $2059.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now where quality was up as was the market.  There was a better selection of trade and heavy weight lambs as well as hoggets with the market selling to a dearer trend.

Light lambs were $9 dearer, ranging from $85 - $119, trade lambs lifted $5 selling from $127 - $157, heavy weight lambs also saw an increase this week up $15 to sell from $164-$188, extra heavy lambs lifted $20 for those with a short, fresh skin with prices ranging $198 - $217.  The best heavy hoggets reached a top of $138.

Just a couple of quick quotes this week for Carter Lindsay & Weber clients -

Locally for Paul and Carmel Quinn of “Caroo” at Dubbo, who sold Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition to the trade orders for $128.

And for the Whillock family  of “Maxland” at Geurie, who sold second cross lambs in a 4 score condition with a half inch skin for $197.

Into the mutton pens now where quality was mixed yet prices lifted up to $25 across most grades.

Light ewes sold from $42 - $65.
Medium weight ewes sold from $70 - $88.
Heavy ewes sold from $96 - $115.

Light wethers sold from $48 - $69.
Medium weight wethers sold from $75 - $86.
Heavy weight wethers sold from $95 - $132.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for some of their clients - 

Kelvin Baker of “Ercildoon” at Narromine, sold Aussie White ewes, in a 4 score condition for $111.

And for Jason Beck of “Eurimbla” at Coonamble, sold Merino wethers in a 3 score condition to the export orders for $112.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.

If you make a mistake please initial it.
