Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Campbell Rose taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of March 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included –

4700 fat cattle 

16000 lamb

13000 mutton

 Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers increased by 300 head from the previous week. Quality remaining mixed with a large run of medium weight feeders being yarded.  There was an increase in cattle to return to the paddock and fewer grown cattle to suit the processors.


Restocker cattle were firm with last week's market, with quality being a factor. Steers topping at 418 cents and the heifers reaching 304 cents.  

Feeder steers were 20 cents cheaper for the middle weights, and 10 cents cheaper for the heavy weights, ranging from 310 – 386 cents.  

Feeder heifers fell 30 cents from last week's strong market, selling from 270 – 340 cents.

Grown steers eased 10 to 20 cents, with the heifers also dipping 20 cents.  Steers sold from 274 – 311 cents and the heifers ranged from 255 – 295 cents.

The cow market was 20 – 30 cents cheaper, with prime heavy cows selling from 220 – 238 cents and the medium weight 2 scores selling from 200 – 231 cents.


Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

Matt and Kylie Whale of ‘Glenroy’ at Wellington, sold Santa cross feeder heifers for 276 cents, weighing 355kg and returning $982.

Pete and Leanne Stimpson of ‘Medway Park’ at Dubbo, sold Simmental weaner steers for 368 cents, they weighed 307kg and returning to the paddock for $1132.

Paul and Carmel Quinn of ‘Caroo’ also at Dubbo, sold weaner heifers for 288 cents, weighing 311kg and returning $896

Terry and Robin Hanigan of ‘Hollywood’ at Coonamble, sold heavy vendor bred PTIC Angus cows for 235 cents, weighing 656kg returning $1543. 

And lastly for Anthony Gibson of ‘Wilgadale’ at Girilambone, who sold heavy Hereford cows for 224 cents, weighing 750kg and returning $1680. 


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where numbers increased and the quality was better. There was a good number of trade and heavy lambs with a few more extra heavy lambs yarded.

Light lambs to kill were dearer, up $5 - $10, selling from $65 to $118.  Trade lambs were firm this week selling from $113 - $155.  Heavy weight lambs were firm, with prices ranging from $148 - $205, and the extra heavies topped at $228.

There was a solid yarding of hoggets again this week, again receiving a firm price off last week's market, the best price for heavy hoggets being $130.

Into the mutton pens now, where the numbers jumped and quality was fair to good.  Prices dipped $25 - 30 off last week's strong market.

 Medium weight ewes sold from $32-$73, heavy Merino ewes reached $99 and the heavy crossbred ewes made $81.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -

Firstly, the Whillock Family of ‘Maxland’ at Geurie, who sold heavy crossbred lambs to $177.

Paul Muirhead at Nyngan, sold Dorper Lambs in a 3 score condition to the southern orders for $136.

The Dewhurst Family of ‘Elmsley’ at Hermidale, sold prime crossbred hoggets for $128.

Matthew Scott of ‘Gum Valley’ at Warren, sold heavy Australian White Hoggets for $130.

And lastly, for George and Jess Holland of ‘Avondale’ at Goolma, who sold heavyweight Merino ewes for $68 to the local exports.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
