Fat Cattle Report
Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of March, 2024.
Tallied numbers this week included –
3600 fat cattle
18900 lamb
7600 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where the quality of the yarding wasn’t that of the previous weeks. With a larger percentage of weaners suiting backgrounders or the feed orders.
Young kill cattle were 10 – 15 cents cheaper with prime yearlings bringing 265 - 314c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were also back 10 -15 cents, with the feeder steers selling from 280 - 372c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 230 - 290c/kg.
Young restockers were sold to a weaker demand compared to last week’s market. With steers selling to a top of 398c/kg and 288c/kg for heifers.
Grown steers were unchanged making from 282 – 290c/kg while the grown heifers were 5 cents better selling from 260 – 290c/kg.
Cows were 15 cents cheaper, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 170 - 201c/kg while the prime heavy weights made 200 - 225c/kg.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –
Firstly to Tooraweenah for the Markey family of “Lancelot”, who sold heavy Angus cross feeder steers for 330 cents, weighing 555kg making $1831.
Across to Tomingley for the Gratton family, who sold fat heavy weight Angus cows that brought 217 cents, they weighed 605kg bringing $1315.
To Yeoval for the Vaughan family of “Iona”, who sold well bred Angus heifers that were a massive 600kg and sold for 290 cents, making over $1743.
To Wellington for the Gratton family of “Pine Park”, who sold well bred Angus feeder steers weighing 433kg bringing 337 cents and coming back at $1460.
Lastly for a Molong vendor, who sold heavy weight Angus feeder steers that made 310 cents they weighed 580kg bringing $1798.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where there was a larger percentage of secondary lambs penned, as well as large consignments of Dorpers and Aussie Whites.
Lightweight lambs to kill were firm with the 12kg – 18kg 2 scores making from $73 - $120.
Trade weight lambs were $5 - $10 cheaper.
Trade weight lambs 20kg – 24kg made $113 - $140 to average between 570 – 600c/kg.
Heavy weight lambs 24kg – 26kg selling from $142 - $177.
With lambs up to 30kg ranging from $160 - $188 to average 620c/kg.
Extra heavy lambs over 30kg sold for $180 - $225.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients -
Firstly to Bourke for the Mannix family of “Gumbooka”, who sold fresh Dorper lambs in a 2 & 3 score condition to the southern orders for $118.
At Nyngan for the Hoare family of “Karabran”, who sold Dorset cross SAMM lambs with a 2 inch skin to the northern export for $142.
Across to Gulargambone for Col Ryan of “Mayfield”, who sold crossbred lambs with an 8 week skin, grain assisted in 3 & 4 score condition for $158.
Lastly to Geurie for the Whillock family of “Maxland”, who sold well bred 2nd cross lambs with a 6 weeks skin, in 3 & 4 score condition for $150.
Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a mixed quality yarding that saw everything gain $10.
Merino ewes sold from $35 - $88 while the crossbred ewes brought $40 - $108 with mutton averaging around 215 – 250c/kg.

Sheep and goat electronic identification
Applications open for producers and agents
All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.
Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.
Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.
Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
