Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 3rd of March 2024.

Tallied numbers this week included -

2700 fat cattle
15000 lamb
10000 sheep

Into the cattle pens firstly where there was a smaller number on offer with all categories represented. The market in general was fully firm for most categories, with the cows definitely stronger.

Vealer steers to the restockers in shorter supply, 300 - 358 cents, with the heifer portion 300-240 and up to 300 cents and mainly being the lighter weights.

Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters, 300 - 348 cents, with the larger majority around that 350 cents. Heavier drafts over 400kg, 300 - 346 cents.

Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters, 270 - 294 cents, with backgrounder types 220 - 250 cents. Heavier drafts over 400kg to feedlotters, 280 - 320 cents, with a big majority around that 290 cent mark.

Into export sales, heavy feeder steers over 500kg live 310 - 328 cents but mainly around that 310 - 320 cent mark, with young kill drafts mainly being 2 and 4 tooth, 288 - 315 cents with the majority around 308 cents.

Export feeder heifers up to 500kg, 250 - 280 cents, with kill drafts 270 - 314 cents with the majority around 280 cents.

Boner cows 130 - 160 cents, medium weights 190 - 225 cents with the heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 220 - 235 cents and this week topping at 250 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following results for their clients this week -

Firstly for the Millner Family off “Geurie Homestead”, who sold forward feeder Angus heifers for 300 cents, they weighed 375kg & returned $1127.

For the Koerstz Family off “Warrie” who sold heavy feeder Angus steers for 334 cents, they weighed 530kg to come back at $1770.

Craig & Kerry Walters off “Plain Creek” sold prime Angus steers to kill for 330 cents, the weighed 540kg & these top steers came back at $1780.

While for Terry & Robyn Hannigan off “Hollywood” at Coonamble who sold their usual large framed Angus cows in top condition with a red pregnancy test tag for 254 cents, they weighed 675kg & these top cows came back at $1715.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now where with a similar number yarded on what was a cheaper market.

Into crossbred sales firstly with light weight restocker types $48 - $76. Light drafts up to 18kg dressed $92 - $105. Medium trade $105 - $115. Heavy trade $124 - $150 with the majority around $140.

Light export $140 - $166 with the draft up to 26kg dressed $168 - $189, with super heavies either side of 30kg dressed $170 - $190, with this weeks top price getting to $216.

To Merino sales, light kill types up to 18kg dressed $70 - $84, light trade $88 - $100, medium trade $102 - $137.

Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following lamb results for clients this week -

For Paul & Carmel Quin who sold Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition & well rounded for $88.

Peter & Leanne Stimpson sold well rounded Merino hogget’s in a nice 3 score condition & these top hogget’s made $110.00

At Nyngan for the Hoare Family off “Karabran” who sold well rounded SAMM lambs to the heavy trade butchers with an inch skin for $106

To Baradine for the Horder Family who sold light trade weight white Dorper lambs, well rounded and they made $93.

The Finlay Family off “Kinross” also sold trade weight Dorper lambs, also well rounded & they made $93.

While for Bruce & Margaret McConnaughty off “Elstow” who sold large framed, well rounded, Merino hogget’s in a 3 score condition, with a 1/2 inch skin for $110.

Into the sheep pens now where the market was fully firm for medium & heavy weight sheep & cheaper for lighter weights.

Light boner ewes $35 to $46
Medium weights $44 - $77
Heavy weights $53 to $86 for Merinos or $64 - $85 for crossbreds.
Drafts up to 30kg dressed $85 - $115 for Merinos or $74 - $110 for crossbreds.

Boner wethers in short supply $45 - $50
Medium weight $60 - $76 with export weights $80 - $90.

Well that wraps it up for this week & just to remind everyone, there will be no fat cattle sale in Dubbo next Thursday 28th of March due to the Easter break & there will be no lamb & sheep sale on Monday 1st of April. We will be back in full swing with Fat cattle on Thursday the 4th of April and our monthly store cattle sale on Friday April 5th.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
