Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the first week of November, 2023.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  3300 fat cattle
13200 lambs
  6700 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a mixed yarding, with some good numbers of yearlings for feeders but only limited trade cattle.  Grown steers, heifers and cows were in good supply along with a large supply of secondary type cattle.  

Young kill cattle were 10 – 20 cents cheaper with quality being the main factor, with prime yearlings bringing 150 - 220c/kg.  

Feeder steers and heifers were 10 – 15 cents dearer with feeder steers selling from 164 - 233c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 145 - 214c/kg.  

Young restockers sold to a stronger demand gaining up to 20 cents, with steers selling to a top of 272c/kg and 228c/kg for heifers.

Grown steers and heifers were 10 – 20 cents dearer with the prime grown steers making 170 – 223c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 170 – 204c/kg.  

Cows were unchanged, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 125 - 163c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 155 - 195c/kg to average around 173c/kg.


 Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a plainer quality yarding with the odd pen of well finished heavy weight and trade lambs.

Trade weight new season lambs were firm to $5 cheaper selling from $56 - $115 to average 450 – 495c/kg.

Trade weight old lambs were sold $5 - $10 cheaper selling for $50 - $117.

Heavy weight lambs were $5 cheaper with old lambs over 24kg selling from $112 - $150 to average between 460 – 480c/kg.

Merino lambs were unchanged with trade weight Merino lambs selling from $40 - $78.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades gained $5 - $10.

Merino ewes sold from $10 - $50 while the crossbred ewes brought $10 - $46 and the Merino wethers topped at $49.

Most mutton is selling between 100 – 150c/kg.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
