Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 1st week of July 2023. Tallied numbers this week included –

1000 fat cattle
7,100 lambs
2,400 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was some wide spread rain had numbers reduced. It was a good quality yarding with some good pens of well finished grown steers with limited heifers and young cattle to suit the feed orders.

Young kill cattle were firm with prime yearlings selling from 220c - 338c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were 15c dearer with Feeder steers selling from 220 - 370c/kg while the feeder heifers made 180c - 328c/kg.

Young restockers were sold to a stronger demand being up to 20c dearer selling to a top of 370c/kg for steers and 286c/kg for heifers. Grown steers were 10 - 15c dearer with the prime grown steers making 270c – 320c/kg while the heifer portion topped at 260c/kg.

Cows were 5 – 10c dearer, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 100 -212c/kg while the prime heavy weights made 213 - 246c/kg to average around 234c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly to cattle that were off agistment at Goolma who sold well finished Angus & Angus cross cows for 226c/kg and weighing 597kgs coming back at $1350/head.

Lastly to Stuart Town for Brian Brazier who sold well bred Angus steers straight off the cow to the restocker orders weighing 265kg and making 370c/kg bringing $983/head.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a fair quality yarding with good runs of trade and heavy weight lambs alongside a fair number of secondary types. There were also some very well finished Merinos penned.

Trade lambs were $5 - $10 dearer with the 20kg – 24kg lambs making $80 - $140/head averaging around 480c – 530c/kg. Heavy weight lambs were about firm with 24kg – 30kg lambs selling for $118 - $148 averaging around 510c - 525c/kg. Lambs over 30kgs sold to a top of $167 averaging 480c/kg. Merino lambs were $15 dearer with trade weights selling for $70 - $126 while heavy weight Merinos made up to $150.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients -

Locally for Ross Yeo off “Lambar”, who sold, well bred 2nd cross lambs in a fresh 3 & 4 score condition to the northern exporter for $140.

In the same district John Blease off “Tanners Creek”, who sold, fresh Aussie White lambs in a 2 & 3 score condition for $80.

Into the mutton pens now, where the lightweight sheep were unchanged while the medium and heavyweights were $5 - $10 cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $50 - $115 while the crossbred ewes brought $62 - $116 and the Merino wethers topped at $95/head. With most grades of sheep averaging between 315c – 360c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients -

Quickly to Wellington for Paul Vernon off “Gunners Dam”, who sold, well bred Merino ewes with a 8 week skin in a 4 score condition for $115.
