Cattle Report


Good morning everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the fourth week of November 2023.  Tallied numbers this week included -

2700 fat cattle
8000 lambs
7000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a smaller number on offer due to some welcomed rain in surrounding districts.  The market in general was 10 to 20 cents dearer for most categories on the back of last week’s stronger market. Most categories were represented but there was a big presence of yearling cattle.

Light vealer steers to restockers 274 to 352 cents, while the heifer portion made 249 to 322 cents.  With heavier steer drafts 280 to 320 cents with heifers 250 to 300 cents.

Yearling steers under 300kg to restockers 306 to 355 cents, with the feeder portion 216 to 295 cents.  Yearling heifers under 300kg also to restockers 220 to 300 cents with heavier feeder weights 230 to 254 cents.

Into export sales, with heavy kill steers in short supply this week and seeing sales between 220 to 243 cents, with feeders up to 500kg 230 to 276 cents, with heavier weights over 500kg 240 to 267 cents.  Feeder heifers up to 500kg 210 to 230 cents for the majority with fresher forward drafts making up to 240 cents, with kill drafts 220 to 235 cents.

Cows were a little bit short on supply with light boner cows, and there wasn’t many of them 100 to 120 cents.  Medium weights 168 to 182 cents with a large majority around that 170 cent mark, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 170 and 215 cents generally, with some cleaner cows making up to 229 cents.

Just some quick quotes for Carter Lindsay & Weber clients –

For Mark and Trudie Altus at Wongarbon, who sold forward yearling Angus steers for 291 cents to feedlotters, they weighed 450kg and they came back at $1300.

For the Millner family at Geurie, who sold forward Charolais cross heifers to feeders for 243 cents, they weighed 480kg and these top heifers came back at $1180.

While at Stuart Town for the Lawson family who sold a run of Herford cross heifers to feedlotters for 256 cents, they weighed 420kg and these top heifers came back at $1080, while on the same truck, prime Santa cows that weighted 590kg for 215 cents and these top cows came back at $1270.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into Into the lamb pens now, where there was a similar number to last week with some good quality lambs on offer.  The market in general was up to $10 dearer for most categories, with the better-quality lambs starting to see a more regular solid rate.  With lighter weight lambs fully firm to slightly dearer.

To the suckers firstly, with light trade weights to kill up to 20kg dressed $62 to $85, with restocker drafts up to $70
Medium trade $96 to $116, but had to be good to get over $100
Heavy trade weights $118 to $126
With export weights over 24kg dressed $130 to $146

Into older crossbred sales, light kill drafts up to 16kg dressed $21 to $53
Up to 20kg dressed $52 to $70  
Medium trade $84 to $125, with the biggest majority around $105  
Heavy trade $125 to $135  
With export weights over 26kg dressed seeing sales between $139 and $166

To the Merino’s, up to 16kg dressed $23 to $42  
Up to 18kg dressed $40 to $60, with the majority around $50  
Medium trade $78 to $88  
Heavy trade $85 to $100

Into the mutton pens now, where the market was fully firm.

Boner ewes $22 to $26  
Medium weights $22 to $45 for Merino’s, with some well finished ewes with a big skin making up to $50 with the crossbred portion $31 to $47
Export weights over 24kg dressed $41 to $62 and mainly all Merino’s
With some super heavies this week estimated to weight over 30kg dressed and they were crossbreds $48 to $62.

Well, that about wraps it up for this week, just keep in mind there are only 3 fat cattle sales left for the year in Dubbo, with the last one on Thursday 14th December.  And the last sheep sale is on Monday the 18th December.  The Dubbo sales will resume in the new year on Monday the 8th of January 2024.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for producers and agents

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
