Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s market reports out of Dubbo for the third week of September 2023. 

Tallied numbers included –

  4600 fat cattle
21000 lambs
  5500 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was another large number on offer and unfortunately the market was cheaper on last week’s tougher market, with most categories 10 to 20 cents cheaper and could have been more in places with heifers very, very tough regardless of weight.

Light vealer steers to restockers 128 to 165 cents, with heavier drafts over 300kg 176 to 229 cents, with the biggest majority either side of 200 cents.  Light vealer heifers under 200kg to restockers 50 to 115 cents, with a big chunk around that 100 cent mark, with heavier drafts over 200kg 128 to 180 cents, with the biggest majority 150 to 160 cents. 

Yearling steers under 400kg to restockers 170 to 240 cents with the biggest chunk around the 200 cent mark, with feeder drafts 186 to 258 cents but they were mainly around 220 to 230 cents.  Heavier drafts over 400kg to feedlotters 180 to 260 cents for the better bred drafts although the biggest majority was 210 to 220 cents, with the crossbred or plainer types 178 to 240 cents with a heap around that 210 mark.  Suitable kill drafts saw sales between 210 to 285 cents and there wasn’t many of them.

Yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers 134 to 176 cents for the fresher drafts with a lot around 150 cents, with plainer drafts 68 to 140 cents.  Heavier drafts over 400kg 120 to 140 cents generally and up to 174 cents for some fresher drafts, with suitable kill drafts 150 to 218 cents.

Into export sales, with heavier feeder drafts up to 500kg 180 to 220 cents, with kill drafts 196 to 254 cents.  Heavy kill heifers saw most sales between 194 and 214 cents but had to be good to get over 200 cents, with lighter trimmer drafts under 500kg live 188 to 234 cents. 

Light Boner cows 50 to 70 cents
Medium weights 80 to 100 cents for the plainer types or 105 to 155 cents for the fresher types
With heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 120 and 178 cents for the fresher types or 150 to 194 for the prime drafts with most sales around that 180 cent mark


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

To the lamb pens now where there was another large number on offer with most categories well represented, but unfortunately the market was still very tough and cheaper for most categories.

Into crossbred sales firstly, light kill types up to 16kg dressed $15 to $28
Up to 18kg dressed $38 to $46
Light trade $58 to $70
Trade weights $70 to $96
Heavy trade $80 to $112 but had to be good to get over $100
With export weights $95 to $123
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $125 to $130

To Merino sales, with light weights up to 16kg dressed $12 to $26
Up to 18kg $18 to $33 with the biggest majority around $20
Light trade $25 to $48
Medium trade $33 to $56
With heavy trade or light export $44 to $75

With the best Merino hogget making up to $50,
With the best crossbred hogget $50 to $60 and they are the pick of the yard

Into the mutton pens now, where values remained similar to last week’s tough market, unfortunately the better sheep seemed to be the hardest hit – seeing losses of up to $20.

Light boner ewes $10 to $12
Boner ewes $8 to $24
Medium weights $20 to $36 for Merino’s and crossbreds seeing very similar values
With export weights $22 to $46 for Merino’s or $23 to $38 for crossbreds
