Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of September 2023.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  5400 fat cattle
21000 lambs
  6400 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a pretty good quality yarding.  With some good runs of well finished cattle to suit processors and a larger portion of secondary types to suit restockers. Young kill cattle were cheaper with prime vealers topping at 220c/kg. Prime yearlings bringing 110 - 190c/kg.

Feeder steers and heifers were cheaper with feeder steers selling from 170 - 242c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 82 - 160c/kg.

Young restockers were sold to a stronger demand selling for 120 - 249c/kg for steers and 98 - 160c/kg for heifers. Grown steers and heifers were 30 – 40 cents cheaper with the prime grown steers making 180 – 220c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 140 – 195c/kg.

Cows were 30 cents  cheaper, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 50 - 135c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 120 - 162c/kg to average around 147c/kg. 


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a good quality yarding with a good selection of well finished heavy weight lambs alongside the odd pen of neat trade weights.  There were also some good pens of well finished new season lambs and a large percentage of lightweight secondary types. 

Trade lambs were $5 cheaper with old lambs being $30 - $101/head averaging 270 – 360 cents.  Trade weight new season lambs sold from $75 - $118 averaging 430 – 450c/kg. Heavyweight lambs were $5 cheaper with lambs over 24kg selling from $90 - $140 to average 400c/kg.  Heavyweight new season lambs topped at $121 and averaged 435c/kg. Merino lambs were firm with trades making $20 - $78 and heavyweights topped $102. 

 Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a good quality yarding. 

 Merino ewes sold from $10 - $60 while the crossbred ewes brought $12 - $46 and the Merino wethers topped at $45/head.  Most of the better sheep averaged 110 – 125c/kg.
