Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of April 2024.  

Tallied numbers this week included –

3200 fat cattle
18800 lambs
12400 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers had dropped by over 1000 head and the quality of the yarding was pretty good.

Young kill cattle were up to 10 cents dearer, with prime steer yearlings bringing 300 - 336c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 280 – 319c/kg.  

Feeder steers were unchanged while the heifers were 10 cents dearer. Feeder steers selling from 280 - 360c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 240 - 314c/kg.

Young restockers were sold to a weaker demand compared to last week, with steers selling to a top of 388c/kg and 290c/kg for heifers.

Grown steers and heifers were 5 – 10 cents cheaper with the prime grown steers making 260 – 308c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 230 – 250c/kg.

Cows were back by up to 20 cents, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 148 - 212c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 205 - 232c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients -

Firstly to Nyngan for the Burley family of “Woodlands Station”, who sold heavy Angus cows weighing 579kg making 215 cents and coming back at $1245.

To Dubbo for the Gratton family, who sold well bred Angus feeder steers for 360 cents, they weighed 330kg bringing $1190.

Lastly to Geurie for the Whillock family of “Maxland”, who sold Angus cross steers straight of the cow to the kill orders for 326 cents, weighing 364kg making $1188.


 Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where there was an increase in lamb numbers and also an increase in quality.

Lightweight lambs to kill were $10 - $15 cheaper with the 12-18kg 2 scores making from $46 - $100.  

Trade weight lambs were $5 - $15 cheaper with lambs 20-24kg made $96 - $147 to average between 600 - 620c/kg.  

Heavy weight lambs were unchanged with lambs 24-30kg selling from $155 - $220, with lambs over 30kg topping at $237.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients -

Firstly to Bourke for the Mannix family of “Gumbooka”, who sold well bred Dorper lambs in a 2 & 3 score condition to the southern orders for $95.

To Gulargambone for Col Ryan of “Mayfield”, who sold well bred crossbred lambs in a 3 and 4 score condition with an inch skin, to the local exporter for $189.

Lastly to Wellington for the Whale family of “Glenroy”, who sold well bred 2nd cross lambs in a 3 score condition to the trade orders for $164.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a mixed quality yarding that saw everything lose $10 - $15.

Merino ewes sold from $30 - $115 while the crossbred ewes brought $25 - $100 with mutton averaging around 240c/kg.

Just a couple of quick quotes this week -

Firstly to Warren for the Earl family of “Longstowe”, who sold well bred Merino ewes with an inch and a half skin to the local export for $103.

Lastly in the same district for the Cosgrove family of “Lauriston”, who sold well bred Dohne ewes that were bare shorn in a 3 & 4 score condition for $88.

Sheep and goat electronic identification

Applications open for Producers and Agents.

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.  

Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.

Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2024 for processors and saleyards and 31 March 2024 for primary producers and agents, or until program funding is exhausted.
