Fat Cattle Report
Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of August 2024.
Tallied numbers this week included –
4100 fat cattle
32500 lamb
11900 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers were back slightly on the previous week and so was the quality. There was a large portion of feeder cattle as well as trade yearlings, with only a limited supply of grown cattle while there was a mix run of cows.
Young kill cattle were 10 – 15 cents dearer with prime yearlings bringing 355 - 408c/kg for the steers, while the heifers topped at 415c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were 10 – 15 cents cheaper with feeder steers selling from 310 - 420c/kg while the feeder heifers made 276 - 358c/kg.
Grown steers and heifers were 10 – 15 cents cheaper with the prime grown steers making 320 – 405c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 325 – 367c/kg.
Cows were 10 cents dearer, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 210 - 288c/kg while the prime heavy weights made 280 - 339c/kg.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients.
Firstly to Nyngan for the Burley Family of ‘Woodlands Station’, who sold well bred Angus steers that weighed 391kg making 400 cents and coming back at $1565.
Locally in the Dubbo district for the Grattan family, who sold heavy weight Angus cows that weighed 700kg, they brought 315 cents making $2206.
Lastly to Wellington for the Prendergast Family of ‘Fairview’, who sold well fattened Angus cows for 318 cents, they weighed 670kg bringing $2131.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where numbers lifted and the quality was mixed. With a larger portion of Merino lambs and hoggets penned along side mixed trade lambs and less heavyweights.
Lightweight lambs to kill were $5 - $10 dearer with the 12kg – 18kg 2 scores making from $50 - $140. Trade weight lambs were sold around firm. Trade weight lambs 20kg – 24kg made $135 - $195 to average between 750 – 815c/kg. Heavy weight lambs 24kg – 26kg selling from $187 - $218, with lambs up to 30kg bringing from $198 - $253 to average 815c/kg.
Extra heavy lambs over 30kg topped at $289. Merino lambs were unchanged with trade weight Merino lambs sold from $153 - $230 and heavy weights topped at $259.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients.
Firstly to Bollon for the Edwards family of “Acme Downs’, who sold well bred Dorper lambs in a 3 & 4 score condition to the exporters for $200.
Now to Tottenham for the Cook family of ‘Donola’, who sold well bred 1st cross wether lambs in a fresh 4 score condition, with an 8 week skin to the local exporter for $230.
Lastly, locally at Dubbo for the Toohey family, who sold extra heavy crossbred lambs in a 4 score condition, with a half inch skin to the exports for $255.
Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a good quality yarding that saw everything gain $15.
Merino ewes sold from $86 - $146 while heavy crossbred ewes brought $106 - $160 while Dorpers topped at $135. With most mutton averaging between 360 – 430c/kg.
Just a quick quote this week for The Turner Family at to Warren, who sold heavy weight Merino ewes with a 1 ½ inch skin to the local exporter for $122.

Sheep and goat electronic identification
Applications open for producers and agents
All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.
Sheep and farmed goat producers and stock and station agents can apply for a 50% rebate to supplement the purchase and installation of eID systems and equipment for sheep and farmed goats. Applications opened for saleyards and processors in the sheep and farmed goat sector on 1 August 2023.
Before you apply, make sure to check the guidelines for producers and agents. These guidelines contain information about what you are eligible for and what to include in your application.
Funding under the scheme is limited and therefore early applications are encouraged.
