Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 1st week of February, 2025. 

Tallied numbers this week included –

  4300 fat cattle
17000 lambs
12000 mutton and
  2000 store cattle

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers lifted on the back of the continuing dry, with plenty of heavy and feeder weight cattle on offer.  All the usual buyers were in attendance and operating in a dearer market.

Young cattle to the trade were 5 cents better with prime vealers selling from 268 - 351 cents. Feeder steers and heifers finished 7 cents stronger.  Feeder steers sold from 340 - 388 cents, while feeder heifers sold from 250 - 320 cents.

Grown steers and heifers were 8 cents dearer with prime grown steers selling from 298 - 350 cents and the grown heifers sold from 275 - 332 cents.  

Cows remained firm on last week’s rates, with the better D3/4 cows selling from 270 - 298 cents.  The best heavy bull reached a top of 300 cents.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

Locally for Paul and Carmel Quinn of ‘Caroo’ at Dubbo, who sold Angus heifers for 297 cents, they weighed 425kg and returned $1263.

The Crockett family of ‘Nithsdale’ at Bakers Swamp, sold heavy Angus bullocks for 296 cents, weighing 836kg to return $2476.

The Carlow Family at Gilgandra, sold Angus cows for 281 cents, weighing an impressive 836kg to come back at $2351.

Lastly for John & Mary Burley of ‘Woodlands Station’ at Nyngan, who sold Angus cows for 280 cents, weighing 601kg to return $1684.



Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now where a mixed yarding greeted buyers with only limited numbers of heavy and extra heavy weight lambs on offer.  Hoggets were well supplied as were large runs of light weight lambs.  All the usual buyers were in attendance.

Lightweight lambs lifted $4 to sell from $65 - $118.  Trade lambs were firm to $5 stronger selling from $120 - $160 for the woolly poorly presented types and $185 - $207 for the neatly shorn better presented lambs.  Heavy lambs were $10 better, ranging from $210 - $268.

Merino lambs were limited in number with trade weights selling from $120 - $173 and the heavy weight Merino’s topping out at $193.  The best heavy hoggets reached a top of $226.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs for some of their clients -

The Quinn Family of ‘Caroo’ at Dubbo, sold Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition for $185.

The Whale Family of ‘Glenroy’ at Wellington, sold 2nd cross light weight lambs to the restocker for $156.

Annabelle McFetridge of ‘Tathra’ at Collie, sold Aussie White lambs in a 4 score condition for $200.

And for The Mannix Family of ‘Gumbooka’ at Bourke, who sold Dorper lambs in a 3 and 4 score condition to the export orders for $200.

Into the mutton pens now where there were some very good lines on offer in a dearer market.

Light ewes sold from $43 - $71
Medium weight ewes sold from $76 - $120
Heavy weight ewes sold from $130 - $150

Light wethers sold from $68 - $97
Medium weight wethers sold from $105 - $138
Heavy weight wethers sold from $150 - $170

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following mutton for some of their clients -

Craig & Susie McFetridge of ‘Tathra’ at Collie, sold Merino ewes in a 3 score condition with a 2 inch skin for $140.

And for The Goldsmith Family of ‘Urungie’ at Coonamble, who sold Merino ewes in a 3 score condition with an inch skin for $130.
